For a full CV please contact me at michael@michael-quigley.com Summary After completing a quantitative BSc and MSc, covering a number of operational research and statistical techniques, I progressed onto a system dynamics PhD. During my PhD, I worked as a research assistant on a large multi-institutional research project. This work has given me the opportunity to present at international conferences, publish research papers and lecture at numerous universities. Education 2005 – Present: University of Salford, Centre for Operational Research and Applied Statistics Operational Research PhD: System Dynamics Modelling of Higher Educated Human Resources in the UK 2003 – 2004: University of Salford, Operational Research and Applied Statistics MSc: system dynamics modelling dissertation. 2000 – 2003: University of Salford, Business Studies with Quantitative Business Management BSc (Hons), 1st Classification 1992 – 2000: Eccles College, 3 A-levels: A-C; Walkden High School, 11 GCSE’s: A*-C. Work Experience 02/06 – Present: Research Assistant, University of Salford, Sustained Competitiveness in the UK Construction Sector, EPSRC (Budget £1.5 million) A multi-institutional research project conducted by the Innovative Manufacturing Research Centres at the University of Salford, University of Reading and Loughborough University. These three leading research institutions were tasked with trying to give novel and thoughtful insights into the UK construction sector: examining where the firms in the sector have come from, the current state of the UK construction sector and where the future of the sector may lie. This is the first time system dynamics modelling has been applied to examine competitiveness in the UK construction industry and will form a corner-stone for a 10-year research plan. On this project I have completed literature reviews, participated in stakeholder interviews and facilitated workshops as part of data collection exercise. Primarily I am concerned with model building and validation with industrial focus groups. I have also presented the research at international conferences and written numerous articles. 02/06 – 01/07: Part-time Lecturer, University of Salford with additional to the one-to-one tuition. I have lectured 2nd and 3rd year students in Management Science and Forecasting Techniques. This work involved structuring a curriculum, setting a 12 week lecture structure, conducting the lectures and tutorials and the setting and marking of exams. 03/00 – 02/06: Duty Manager, WHSmith My responsibilities included opening and closing the store, preparing work rotas, balancing the cash office and reporting to the store manager later in the week. Whilst at the larger WHSmith store I worked the Cash Office and introduced more frequent, but smaller, till-checks. The store found that this greatly reduced the number of till mistakes, as the employee responsible could be more easily identified and re-trained. Positions of Responsibility 2007-08: President of the Student Chapter of the System Dynamics Society I have been a member of the system dynamics society for 5 years and have been involved with the student chapter for 4 years, attending UK and international conferences. Holding the position of President of the Student Chapter my duties included preparing newsletters, helping to organise the International PhD Colloquium and working as a member of the policy council.
During my tenure the chapter’s membership increased to record levels, I initiated cross-chapter activities for the first time and increased awareness of the organisation that resulted in a tripling of traffic flow to the group’s website. 09/07 – Present: Policy Council Representative, UK Chapter of the SD Society My initial involvement with the UK Chapter’s Policy Council was researching the student SD population in the UK. My research led to the UK chapter trialling a PhD colloquium, which I had to arrange as the Student representative. The success of this day led to it being added to the programme for 2009, 2010 and 2011. Skills I am proficient with Microsoft Office programs.
I am proficient in the system dynamics modelling software Vensim and Powersim.
I have used Minitab, Visual Basic, Simul8, MatLab and @Risk in my studies.
Currently, I am studying Python.
Interests I am interested in human resource planning, which I currently research for my PhD, and macro-economic modelling.
Conferences I have presented at a number of conference in the past few years. These are:
