In Memory of Edward F. Scott

Edward and I met on a bike trip in 1973.  We began playing music together the next year, and our close friendship and musical partnership spanned four decades.

In addition to playing music, Edward was a fine photographer and sculptor.  Indeed, he was good at any task he set his mind to, creative and otherwise.

Selections from the Edward F. Scott Collection

When Edward passed away, his sister Chris, his brother Larry, and his brother-in-law Herb put together a catalogue of more than fifty of Edward’s instruments, with photographs by Larry and Herb.  I have selected some of those photos to illustrate the range of Edward’s collection.  I have not included any of Edward's bowed or percussion instruments.

1968 Hofner

Ed bought this “orchestra” sized guitar when we were in our late teens.

1973 Gibson Les Paul Signature

Edward bought this guitar (then a gold top) my ex-girlfriend's brother in 1977.

1980 Gleason

Robert Gleason made this koa wood guitar for Edward
when he was attending Western Washington
                                                                                                                                                                  University in Bellingham.
1919 Gibson L-3

One of Edward’s first serious pre-Depression Era purchases.

1905 Gibson O-Style Artist Model
This guitar, which I think was made in 1905, was Edward’s grandfather’s.
Ed’s uncle was kind enough to give it him on long-term loan.

 Washburn “1897 New Model”
This guitar was in Edward’s grandfather’s collection.

 1973 Martin D-12-20

I remember Edward buying this when we were kids, but I can’t recall
if we were already out of high school.

 Washburn Rover RO-10 Travel Guitar
A twenty-first century purchase

Undated Kay Kraft tenor guitar

Mid-1930s. The sunburst finish was Edward's work, of which he was justifiably proud.

 Unknown brand/date Hawaiian guitar

Unknown brand/date Hawaiian guitar

A few years ago, Edward bought this for me at a garage sale.
That same day, I had bought a 1930's Hawaiian at a shop.
So Edward kept this one for himself.  Probably 1920s......

1918 (?) Gibson “All Right” Mandolin

One of Edward’s on-line purchases, modified

with a pickup (which was gone by the time Ed got it).

Gibson A-1 model, about 1905
Edward was suspect about the date on this mandolin,
as it looks like a previous owner may have made “modifications.”
But it has the classic A style pumpkin finish (etc) that would put it
in the first decade of the 1900s.

Fender A-Style mandolin (circa 2000)
A new mandolin that Edward played quite often.

1920s Gibson Model Uke-1 Soprano Uke

   1920s Gibson Banjo Uke
The best of Edward's banjo-ukes.

Ugi-Uke
Edward’s 1930s shell-back uke.  I take it that he saw a lot of these
in the two years that he lived on “the Big Island.”

Polk-a-lay-lee
Edward’s grandfather had one of these hanging
over the door of his guitar room/workshop.
When Edward saw one on E-bay,
he could not resist
