Chairman's Message
By Larry Grabenstein MGN Chairman With bad news seemingly followed by more bad news and even more bad news, it is becoming all too commonplace to now just turn the TV off instead of watching the news. Troubles in Afghanistan and Iraq, not to mention Pakistan. Hurricanes in the Caribbean. And now problems of epic proportions in the financial world. Here at the Maryland Gridiron Network, we have a solution to the anxieties of today’s world. Our remedy is “not available in any store (not sure if it is “void where prohibited”), and it’s called MGN DIVERSION. Here’s how it works. The next time you hear someone talking about the woes of LEHMAN BROTHERS, you just smile and think about something else, like the Costa Brothers (OT Phil #72 and LB Rick #43), or the Galt Brothers (Tommy and Deege), or the Henderson Brothers (EJ and Erin), or the Covington Brothers (Al and Keeta), or you are really old, the Modzelewski Brothers from back in the ‘50s. You’re smiling already. The MGN DIVERSION works. Let’s try it again. Someone says MERRILL LYNCH, and immediately you start smiling and think if Lenny Lynch (good offensive lineman from the 70s, remember him?) or of James Lynch (265 pound fullback who personified Chris Berman’s “rumblin’, bumblin’, stumblin’…..I remember seeing James Lynch on a bicycle one time and all I could think was “e-gad, that poor bike”). I am certain that you remember James. Keep on smiling. Let’s try it a third time. Someone says FREDDIE MAC, and you think of a wily old-timer like Fred Joyce (you can also stretch the theme and think of a Big Mac….that works too). Finally, all of us get depressed when we think about rising fuel costs and possible rising interest rates and possible higher taxes and gasoline prices going up….and INFLATION. How depressing. MGN DIVERSION can solve that too. Someone tries to mess with your tranquility by talking about numbers going up, and you just smile and think of Bernardo Bramson. Who’s he?, you might ask. Bernardo Bramson was a Terps placekicker back in the 1960’s. His uniform number was number 0; at least, that was his number at the beginning of the season. When he kicked his first extra point of the season, he took off uniform number 0 and put on uniform number 1. Later in that first game, when he kicked a field goal, he took off uniform number 1 and put on uniform number 4. This isn’t advanced calculus, and that was how Bernardo’s season progressed. As you can see, rising numbers are not necessarily a bad thing. Rising gas prices have you depressed…..no problem, MGN DIVERSION will have you smiling again in no time. The next time someone sees you smiling and says “What are you smiling about?”, just keep on smiling and tell them that you are a member of the Maryland Gridiron Network, and that you KNOW that during these difficult times that your gift to the Football Program is very much appreciated. VERY MUCH APPRECIATED !!! Thank you again for all that you do to support Maryland Football, keep on smiling as the wins hopefully keep on coming, and GO TERPS !! Q&A with Senior QB Jordan Steffy

| MGN Events in Full Swing By Fabian Jimenez MGN Events Committee Chair This season is shaping up to be something special after wins over California, Wake Forest, and Clemson. While the team continues their ACC run, the MGN has a series of upcoming events to keep your momentum going. As always, keep an eye on the MGN website and newsletter for event announcements. One event we hope to have will be away-game watches at various locations in the area. If you wish to assist with a game watch, or wish to recommend a location, please e-mail me at fabianterp@yahoo.com. Also, there will be another Breakfast with the Fridge Event on the Friday before the Terps’ Homecoming Game against NC State in October. We also encourage all members to attend Gloria Friedgen’s fabulous pre-game MGN Tailgate in front of the Gossett Team House, 15 minutes after Terp Alley. Towards the end of the season, we will have information regarding a bowl celebration event. These popular events will feature more interaction with the coaches as well as special MGN bowl related gear. As always, you can renew your membership at any of the events listed above. Lastly, we are looking into have exciting new events early next year. Some consideration is being given to having an MGN event in the Atlanta and New York City areas. Again, if you would like to help then please send me an e-mail. Of course, we will continue to have the Football Banquet, Recruit Celebration, and Spring Update events. The MGN is unmatched with all the year round events it has to offer for your membership dollar. The Decades of the 8’s Reunion
By Denise Del Vecchio and Jamie Wu MGN Letterman Committee Co-chairs The Decades of the 8’s Reunion (1948, 58, 68, 78, 88, 98) was hosted by the MClub and MGN during the weekend of September 19 and 20. It was our second Decades event with hopefully many more to come. What a great coordination between the MClub, MGN, UM Athletics, Terrapin Club, Marketing, Ticket Office, etc. to bring our Football Letterman home and recognize them for their blood, sweat and tears that have moved Maryland Football into its present state. We would like to thank them for all they did for Maryland Football as student athletes and all that they continue to do as Lettermen and fans of Maryland Football. The events began Friday night at the Gossett Team House with a reception and open house. The camaraderie, team spirit and bonding of the Lettermen throughout the six decades was INFECTIOUS and INSPIRATIONAL, to say the least. So much so, that it was difficult to get them into the auditorium for the presentation and then later out the door of Gossett at the end of the evening!!! Many of the conversations centered on the days of yesteryear, and made it seem as they had never left.
The event continued into Saturday where the Decades Reunion Lettermen led the team and coaches down Terp Alley. The game was against Eastern Michigan and we couldn’t have treated our Decades Lettermen to a better victory that day, with the score 51-24!
After the game, they were all invited to share in Gloria Friedgen’s Post Game Tailgate sponsored by Outback Steak House. Outback Steak House, once again, outdid themselves in an incredible meal for all ~ we’d like to graciously extend a special THANK YOU to them.
There, of course, were many events occurring outside of the sponsored ones to allow the Lettermen to bond even further! We wish that we had video footage of the weekend, because so much fun was had by all ~ and I think bribery could occur in quite a few places!!
We’d like to thank EVERYONE that helped coordinate the efforts in the Decades of the 8’s Reunion, to include all the above mentioned, the hotels that were so accommodating and hospitable, the Lettermen hosting tailgates, and you ~ the fans of Maryland Football ~ for loving our guys and welcoming them back ~ AND of course to our Lettermen for coming home to a place of one of their passions.
Next year will be the Decades of the 9’s Reunion (anyone on a team ending in a '9’ to include: freshmen, hurt, red shirted, mgrs and coaches). To ALL Lettermen ~ it’s NEVER too late to start getting your information or your teammates information into Denise at dcollins11@comcast.net, 301-325-0016 or Jamie Wu ’00 at jamiewu56@gmail.com , 301-648-6562. The more you help us find these guys, the better the event will be. Let’s make the Decades of the 9’s the best one yet! Go Terps!! Corvino Family Named Honorary Captains for Eastern Michigan
By Denise Del Vecchio Collins MGN Letterman Committee Co-chair Mike Corvino played football for Maryland from 1978-1982. He was the Co-Captain of the 1982 team. He still holds the career sack record for us and after 21 years his career loss record was broken in 2003 by EJ Henderson ~ PRETTY IMPRESSIVE! Since he was on the 1978 team he would have been part of the Decades of the 8’s Reunion, making this his 30 year reunion. Tragically, Mike was killed in a car accident in July 2007. Following the theme of the Decades of the 8’s Reunion, it was very fitting that the MClub chose the Corvino family to be the Honorary Captains for the Eastern Michigan game. Mike’s family was represented on the field by Mike’s wife Joyce, two daughters Liz and Alex and his cousin Mike D’Alessio. To let you know just how important Maryland Football is to the Corvino family, there were 40 of them that traveled to be with us that day! Seeing them on the field opened the gates for a flood of emotions – morning the loss of Mike, yet also celebrating the life of Mike… the Maryland Football star, husband, father, family member and friend to many of us there. Mike has been and will be missed; he will live on as a legend in Maryland Football.
