What is the Red and Blue Tournament
The Red and Blue Tournament is a Ryder Cup-like event which pits two teams against each other over the course of 36 holes played in two days. There is no set entry fee for this tournament, and there is no prize money for the winners. This event is played for pride, for the fun of competing in a format different from what is played the rest of the year.
The Captains of each team are the current President and Vice President of the MGA. The Captains may solicit monies from participants in order for there to be a wager on the outcome of the matches. This is voluntary and participants in the tournament are not required to make a wager.
Qualifying Criteria for 2012 Tournament
During the year, players earn points towards qualification to play in this event by participating in Wednesday and Saturday events
(participation points) and by doing well in those events (performance points). To see how points are awarded, click on "Download" for the Red and Blue Tournament Award Points in the attachment at the bottom of this page.
Players who qualify are divided into two teams (Red and Blue) and compete against each other in three different formats.
The criteria to qualify for this tournament are:
- Top 30 overall point getters for all events, and
- Top 6 point getters for Saturday events who are not in Top 30 overall
- Anyone with a total of 40 points including a minimum of 20 participation points not in the above 2 groups

Red and Blue Tournament Teams
- There will be a BLUE TEAM and a RED TEAM (Match Teams).
- After each MGA golf event, all players will be ranked on one list which will be posted on the MGA website. See Tournament Standings under Attachments at the bottom of this page.
- Click on "Download" to look at it (clicking on "View" doesn't always work).
- At the conclusion of the season, all players who meet the qualifying criteria will be notified.
- The President and Vice-President of the MGA will captain the two teams.
- Two additional player captains will be assigned to each team, and teams will be adjusted to ensure equality of handicaps.
- Following the first MGA event in March, a selection process will be held; all available qualifying players will be assigned to a team; the Tournament Committee shall preside over the team-selection process. The selection process will be open for all members to observe. During the process, players will be identified only as player 1, player 2 etc
- Two player lists will be made. One for Blue/Sr Moorish tee players, and one for green/white tee players.
- Players on each list will be sorted by handicap index. (in the event of equal indexes, ascending alphabetically)
- For each tee-set, beginning with the lowest handicap player, one player will be assigned to team A, the next two to team B, the next two to team A, and so on to the end of the list.
- The President and Vice-President will be identified on the lists, and if necessary, an adjustment will be made to ensure that one captain is assigned to each team, using coin-toss selection if necessary.
- Selection will then proceed until all players are assigned.
- Once all selections are complete, names will be revealed.
- In the event of a late withdrawal an alternate with the handicap closest to the withdrawn player will be selected to replace him.
- Players on each team will be flighted into brackets of four players. All competition will be within the respective brackets of each team.
- Once players are assigned, each team will hold its team meeting.
Tournament Format
- The Tournament is a two day match between two Match Teams (Red and Blue).
- Match pairings for all day-one matches will be decided at least one day prior to the event. Players in each four-man bracket will be formed into two pairs. Within each Match Team, pairings will remain the same for morning and afternoon matches. However, opponents will be reversed for the afternoon matches such that each two-man pairing will play a different opposing pairing within their bracket.
- Match pairings for all day-two matches will be decided immediately following the close of day-one play.
- Pairings for day two matches will be from within the four-man flights.
- The winning Match Team will be the first Match Team to score more than 50% of the available match points.
- In the event that each Match Team scores equal match points, the Match is tied.
- All matches will be played until the individual match point has been decided.
Day-One morning, nine hole match...
- Matches will commence at their appointed tee-time.
- Honors on the first hole will be decided by a coin-toss.
- Players will play a fourball match (better ball)
- Each player receives a modified handicap (one half of his full handicap minus the lowest handicap of the players in the match (rounded to a whole stroke)).
- The team score is the best net score for each hole.
- At any time during play of the hole, shots may be conceded by the opposing team.
- The winning team (best net ball) of each hole will receive a point. On tied holes, each team will receive half a point. A match is won when a team accumulates 5 points. The winning team will score one match-point for the Match Team. If both two-man teams score four and a half points, the match is tied, and half a match point will be awarded to the Match Team.
Day-One afternoon, nine hole match...
- Matches will commence at their appointed tee-time, immediately following morning play.
- Honors on the first hole will be decided by a coin-toss.
- Players in their handicap-indexed brackets will play a foursome match (modified alternate shot). On every hole, each player will play a tee shot. Teams will select one tee shot to play. The person whose tee-shot is not selected will play the next shot. [The ball will be played "down".] Play will continue, in alternate shot format, until the hole is complete.
- At any time during play of the hole, shots may be conceded by the opposing team.
- Each two-man team receives a modified handicap (40% of the partners combined handicap, minus 40% of the combined handicap of the team with the lower handicap, rounded to a complete stroke).
- The team score is the best alternate shot score for each hole.
- The winning team of each hole will receive a point. On tied holes, each team will receive half a point. A match is won when a team accumulates 5 points and the winning team will score one match-point for the Match Team. If both two-man teams score four and a half points, the match is tied, and a half a match-point will be awarded to the Match Team.
Day-Two singles matches...
- Eighteen-hole match-play matches will commence at their appointed tee-time.
- For each match, honors will be decided by a coin-toss.
- In the event that two matches are played at one tee-time (four players), one match will tee-off first on all the front nine holes, the other match will tee-off first on all the back nine holes. However, all matches are individual matches, and team members may not advise their playing partners in any manner except as provided in USGA rules.
- Players will play singles match-play.
- The winner of each match will be awarded one match-point for the Match Team. In the event of a tie, each player will receive half a match point for the Match Team.
- Each individual match will be played to its conclusion (until the individual match-point has been decided), even if the red/blue match has been decided. Individuals may concede their individual match at any point, or may mutually agree to a tie.
Mixed tee matches
Team selection is designed to minimize mixed tee matches. However, in the event of a mixed tee match, the forward tee player may elect to switch tees so that both players will play from the same tees. If the forward tee player does not elect to switch tees, the rear-tee player may elect to play off the forward tees. If neither player wants to switch tees, a mixed tee match will be played and handicaps will be adjusted according to USGA rules.
