Formats

Most of our events are either Individual or 3-man teams.  You will see the following terms used for the 3-man teams:
  • P2P - in this format, a 3-man team is yourself plus two partners of your choosing.   You may sign up as a team, or sign up individually and ask the pro shop to helpo find you a team.
  • A-B-C - in this format, a 3-man team is chosen by the pro shop based on handicaps.

The following describe some of the formats that may be played during the course of an MGA season. The tournament committee will select the format each week for the 2nd and 3rd Wednesday and for the Saturday events.
  • Individual Stroke Play
    • Players are flighted according to handicap within tees played
    • Each player receives his full handicap adjusted according to the tees played within the flight
    • Each player plays his own ball throughout the 18 holes - all putts must be holed and all holes must be completed

  • Three Ball with 3-somes
    • Players play as 3-man teams
    • All teams play in same flight (usually, although this may vary depending on the number of teams)
    • Each player receives his full handicap adjusted according to the tees played within the flight
    • The team score is the two best NET scores on each hole
    • For a score to count toward the team score, the putts must be holed; the third player may pick up at any time he feels he is out of the hole
      • Picking up when out of the hole is encouraged to improve speed of play

  • Modified Alternate Shot with 3-somes
    • Each player on the team hits a drive on every hole
    • Select the drive to be played
      • Each player's drive must be used a minimum of 4 times, twice on the front nine and twice on the back nine
    • One of the players whose drive was NOT selected hits the second shot
    • The third player hits the third shot
    • The 1st player (the one whose drive was chosen) hits the fourth shot
    • Continue alternating in the same order until the ball is holed out
    • Repeat for each hole - the order may be different for each hole

  • Scramble with 3-somes
    • Each player on the team hits a drive on every hole
    • Select the drive to be played
      • A minimum or maximum drive requirement will be put on the use of each players drive
    • Each player on the team hits the second shot
    • Select the second shot to be played
    • Continue this process until the ball is holed out

  • Yellow Ball / Better Ball with 3-somes
    • Each team records two scores for each hole
      • On each tee box, one player is selected to play his own ball for one of the two team scores.  The other team score is the better ball of the other two players
    • Each player must play the Yellow Ball 6 times during the round
    • The team score is the total of the yellow ball plus the better ball
    • All scores are Net with full handicaps

  • Team Quota with 3-man teams
    • Each player receives a "quota" of points to accumulate according to his handicap adjusted for the tees played
      • A player's quota is 36 minus his handicap (e.g., a player with a handicap of 12 has a quota of 24; a player with a handicap of +2 has a quota of 38)
      • The team quota is the sum of all players' quotas
    • Handicaps are used ONLY to determine a player's quota - not in scoring any on particular hole (the quota system accounts for this by giving higher handicap players a lower quota)
    • Points are awarded as follows:
      • Double Eagle - 5 points
      • Eagle - 4 points
      • Birdie - 3 points
      • Par - 2 points
      • Bogey - 1 point
      • Double bogey or worse - 0 points - player should pick up when he cannot score a double bogey or better to improve speed of play
    • A player's score is his quota subtracted from his total points (e.g., if a player with a quota of 24 scores 26 points, his score is +2; if a player with a quota of 24 scores 21 points, his score is -3)
    • The team score is the total of each players score (e.g., +2 -3 -1 = -2)

  • Modified Stableford with 3-man teams
    • Players receive their full handicap adjusted for the tees played
    • Players on the team receive points according to their NET score on each hole
    • Points are awarded as follows:
      • Net Double Eagle:  + 10 points
      • Net Eagle:  + 7 points
      • Net Birdie:  + 4 points
      • Net Par:  +2 points
      • Net Bogey:  + 1 point
      • Net Double bogey or worse:  -1 point
    • The team score is the total of each player's points

  • Shamble with 3-man teams
    • Each player's handicap is adjusted according to USGA recommendations
    • Each player on the team hits a drive on every hole
    • The best drive is selected
      • Each player's drive must be used a minimum of 4 times, twice on the front nine and twice on the back nine
    • Each player then plays the rest of the hole from that point
    • The team score is the 2 best NET scores on each hole

  • Triple 6 with 3-man teams
    • Each team will play a combination of formats.  The formats can be varied, but the following is an example.  Which format is played on which 6 holes will be decided before the event and will depend on which courses we are playing.
    • 6 Holes
      • Format:  A-B-C  Best Ball - 1 low NET score on each hole

    • Each component may pay several places, depending on the number of teams
