The instructors and support staff for the 2009-2010 program are of diverse backgrounds and each brings tremendous talent and experience to the program. Gayle Britt Gayle is currently on the leadership team at the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills CA. Gayle has been involved in the Center’s trainings and curriculum development since 2000. Gayle also is a consultant to the Oracle Education Foundation and has facilitated several 21st Century Learning Institutes including those in California, Singapore, Chicago, South Africa, and Romania. Gayle, who is a National Board Certified Teacher, has taught 7th grade social studies and language arts for many years. In 2003 she helped start a Charter high school and became founding staff. Other part time jobs include coaching for National Board candidates, coaching for the Buck Institute, and teaching EFL in China. His innovative, practical, and personalize style of instruction has empowered thousands of teachers to increase the effectiveness of instruction through the utilization of technology. Chris participated in Merit (then called EWYL) in 2004, was a EWYL Fellow in 2005, and then began directing the program at the end of 2006. He currently teaches Spanish at Thomas Russell Middle School. In addition, he teaches technology integration courses for K-14 educators at the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College. Most recently, she worked as a district instructional resource teacher in the Cupertino Union School District, focusing on instructional technology, assessment, and new teacher support. Beginning in August, Sandra will be the Assistant Principal of Stocklmeir Elementary School in Cupertino. In addition, she joined the KCI Instructional Team this summer and hopes to continue supporting teachers as they use technology to transform their teaching practice. Before he joined the MVWSD team he was a retail manager at one of the Apple Inc. stores for over 4 years. Ben has been using technology since he was four years old and loving every minute of it. One of his nicknames is "Apple Evangelist" because of his love for Apple computers, Mac OS X, and of course the iPhone and iPod. Ben has collected computer skills, customer service skills, training skills, team building, and the drive to show teachers how to incorporate the 21st century into there classrooms to be able to reach the youth on a higher level. Email: bmoeller@mvwsd.org Tahiya Marome About Tahiya: Steven McGriff Steve recently joined the KCI leadership team as Teacher-in-Residence after serving as assistant professor for six years in the Instructional Technology Department at San Jose State University. Over that time Steve became connected with K-12 teachers and technology leaders through the Santa Clara County Office of Education, as well as professional development organizations, such as CUE and SV-CUE. For more than 18 years Steve has been involved in higher education technology leadership working in such diverse roles as training program coordinator, computer systems analyst, networking analyst, distributed computing support analyst, and manager of an academic technology lab. Steve earned his undergraduate degree in Art Design from Stanford University and then later finished a master's degree in instructional technology from San Jose State University in 1998. The following year he started doctoral studies in Instructional Systems at Penn State University, completing his Ph.D. in May 2007 with a thesis on the effects of an analytic trait rubric on self-efficacy. His areas of expertise include instructional design theory, graphic design, and teacher education. His professional interests include systemic change, educational systems design, classroom design, leadership in higher education, and creativity/problem solving. In addition, he is an instructor in the masters degree program in educational administration at Santa Clara University's department of education. Joe received his MA in education from Santa Clara University, and a BA in psychology from Stanford University. Amy Wong Amy is an intern at the KCI and a graduate student at Stanford University in the Learning, Design & Technology program. She is interested in how technology can transform the way people learn. Amy spent the last 6 years writing flight software for weather satellites and now wants to take her tech skills to the education realm. He is the Director of the Mariposa MERIT program, which ran for the first time this summer. He is entering his 11th year as a teacher during which time he has taught a wide variety of students in a wide range of subjects. He started at Gunn High School in Palo Alto where he taught AP US History for seven years alongside US History, psychology, and government. While he was at Gunn, he participated in MERIT, which was known as Earn While You Learn, in 2004 and was a Fellow in 2005. After 2006, Bob and his family moved to the Sierra Foothills in Mariposa, where he has taught social studies in continuation schools in Mariposa and the Central Valley. Next year he will be teaching math and science at a tiny high school, which had four students last year, in Mariposa County. All the while he has been a football coach for the last 18 years and was just named head coach for the Mariposa County High School football team in June. Bob and his wife, Katie, who is a graduate of the MERIT program, have two little kids, Conor, who is two, and Violet, who is one.
