Use of Melody: phrase structure, melodic ideas, motive variation
Well crafted melodic ideas, interesting motives which drive and inspire the piece. Extensive use of motive variation techniques. Effective use of repetition and contrast.
At least 6-8 phrases which demonstrate good melody writing: rhythmic variety, long notes on strong beats, effective use of leaps and high points, some motive variation. Some phrase relationships are evident. Ready now to fully sturcute and develop the ideas.
3-4 phrases, no real phrase relationships, no motive variation, some melodic structure but either too rambling or too repetitive. Needs major melodic revision and construction.

Use of Harmony
(Harmony not required)
Beautifully crafted chord progressions which enhance the mood and drive the style of the music. Primary triads, secondary triads, 7th chords, inversions, secondary dominants and modulation are used to great effect.
Good chord connection. Chords include primary, secondary and 7th chords. Need to explore secondary dominants and modulating to a new key area.
I, IV, and V chords used effectively, but not higher level chord structures (secondary chords, inversions, 7th chords, secondary dominants or modulation).

Use of Rhythm
Exciting use of rhythm which conveys the mood and style of the music. There is a balance between rhythmic variety and repetition. Excellent variety between voices.
Some rhythmic interest. Some work still needed to strike a balance between repetition and contrast across the whole piece. Interplay between voices needs work.
Rhythmically a bit dull and repetitive. The flow of the language does not fit the natural rhythmic flow of
the text.

Overall Form: use of periods, double periods
Ideas are presented in a structurally well thought out design. Smaller formal sections are designed in periods and double periods. Larger forms are evident (binary, Ternary, Rondo, Sonata). The structure enhances the mood and style.
Antecedent/consequent phrase structure is evident. Ideas need to be organized now into large formed structures (binary, ternary, etc.) where sections are carefully plotted out for elements of repetition of contrast.
Ideas are there, but period construction is not evident. Ideas ramble.
