Composition is one of our main Content Standards for music in the State of California, yet few teachers attempt to teach it. I plan to emphasize the creative act of composing, as opposed to the technical skill of reading notes or notating pitches. Many great composers do not read music, and many musicians who read and play well are incapable of writing a song and sharing it. My project is designed in three levels to incorporate students with varying backgrounds in musicianship and theory, and to support the various levels with appropriate technology.

Songs can be shared with the teacher only, posted online as digital recordings to share with a broader audience, shared online as Finale Notepad files, or if selected, performed as part of the Composer's Showcase Concert on June 6, 2010.
