Math is  stupid!  There are all those rules and formulas to remember, but when will I ever need to know that the square root of 144 is 12?  Math is really a waste of time!

If any of those statements sound familiar you are either a parent, teacher or a student who has had an absolutely miserable experience with math.  You may even be all three!  No matter what your situation may be it is necessary for me to inform you that math is not as horrible as it may seem.  Although I cannot say that it is never difficult it is something that everyone needs to have a basic understanding of.  Math is EVERYWHERE!  If you purchased gas, groceries or even a school lunch math was involved.  The cost of groceries had to be calculated, the deli meat you purchased had to be weighed and then multiplied by the price per pound to determine the purchase cost and the semester grade your received from your history teacher was caluclated to find your average.

For the moment I'm going to leave you with something to think about.

Why is math one of the greatest fears of so many people?

There are many ways to teach your students how to conduct surveys and create bar graphs.  This lesson moves away from the normal type of bar graph lesson that incorporates drill and skill.  Here we give the students the ability to create a survey question and conduct it so that they can draw their own conclusions.  This is written for a 5th grade class requiring a lot of teacher support, but would be better utilized with an older group of students.
