What is a coaching session like?

Before we even have a session, we'll take lots of time to define your issue, challenge, goal or project.  This happens via email, takes about 4 hours, and is free for clients.  If you want to do this part over the phone, my regular rates will apply.  Our session times are like dessert.  The main meal comes between sessions.  You'll be working your action plan and answering questions I've posed to you via email.  I'll be researching your topic and generating questions to help you explore it.  This dynamic questions/answer communication takes 1-2 hours of your time and creates a rich source of material for us to work with.  A typical session goes like this:
  1. We'll start with re-stating your issue, challenge, goal, or project.  Life happens and priorities change.  You may come to me trying to build your resume, but a few weeks into our work realize that what you really need is help writing a grant.  Or you may come for help talking to your kids about sex, and then discover that your real issue is talking about sex with your husband.  So our first step will always be to confirm what exactly we are working on.
  2. Our next step will be to review answers to questions I've sent to you via email.  I call this homework.  These questions are open-ended and have no right answer.  The way you interpret the question, the type of answer you give, even your choice not to answer a question- all of this gives us clues for how to best accomplish your goals.  You'll get new questions after every session.  These questions are based on our conversations and my research.
  3. After reviewing homework, I'll share with you any new information I've found.  I'll send you all the links, search terms, and book titles that were a part of my research.  I'll answer any question you have about my findings, and also answer any questions from last week that required fresh research or contemplation.
  4. Lastly, we'll develop an action plan and set a date for our next session.  What exactly will you be doing to meet your challenge, issue, goal, or project?  How will your actions support your vision of what you want to be?
Some sessions have a specialty flavor.  For example, cooking lessons, yoga classes, and even field trips to the grocery store to learn how to shop for wellness.  Read more...
