Phonemotopy in the auditory cortex: MEG evidence from English consonants MEG research has demonstrated a tonotopic (Tiitinen et al., 1993) as well as a "phonemotopic" organization of the auditory cortex (Obleser et al., 2003): Gradience in acoustic formant values of speech sounds was reflected in dipole locations along the anterior-posterior axis. We add to the latter finding using English consonants and conjecture that the best correlate of the dipole location is the ratio of the first and second formant. |
