“The name of this corporation is “The Regents of the University of California” (Bylaw 1.1). The University of California is headed by the Board of Regents. The board is made up of 26 members, 18 of whom are appointed by the Governor of California. Assigned to twelve-year terms, the Regents are in charge of all matters relating to the management, governance and budget of the UC system. Their tasks include appointing the President of the UC, currently Mark Yudof, managing educational planning policy and approving plans for new buildings on campuses and other kinds of development. The Regents are involved in all aspects of business and affairs on every UC campus.
MEET THE REGENTS will introduce you to those in charge of this complex system called the University of California. The exhibition presents 18 portraits of the UC Regents and a family tree that situates, you, the student in relation to the Regents and the UC system. The exhibition will also include a video that that engages the core concepts of the 1960 Master Plan for Higher Education. The exhibition raises the questions of whether the Regents are the most appropriately suited for running one of the world’s most prestigious public higher education systems and whether they are acting within the UC’s best interest.
Are they upholding the principles of the Master Plan? How do the Regents envision the future of the University of California? How do you envision the future of California?
