project team #1

[Note from Peter Levine: You may want to connect to "Immigrant City." That's an event at Tufts that you could visit to pick up ideas or maybe even use as a venue for sharing your findings.]

Members of this group are: Corey Kestenberg, Juhee Chung, Lukas Dow, Gonzalo Digenio, Jonathan Fu

This group needs to:

1. Pick a topic or issue
Our group is working on a map of organizations and people that are in some way a resource for immigrants.

2. Identify one or more potential community partners/audiences
Immigrant Service Providers Group, Somerville
Chinese Progressive Association

3. Explain how network data and analysis could help with the issue
In the realm of non-profits there are lots of groups that tend to work on the same issues, but which do not collaborate effectively to enhance    their mission's goals. A project that names, provides contact information, and shows the connection between groups can ease the process of collaboration between these groups. By connecting groups working on similar issues the power of the work can be enhanced.

4. Envision a final product for the project
Peter has noted using the "Immigrant City" exhibit as a venue for sharing our findings, which is a great idea and which we need to further look into. Another possibility for a final project is to develop the map, and then analyze the map for possible gaps. For example, if there is a certain immigrant population that is not really provided for by any group, this would be a gap. This information on gaps in the organization web could then be presented to a group of organizations so that they could look into sharing this information using the web, and could also look into bridging the gap.

5. Brainstorm starting points for community research
We have separated the research into five initial categories. These categories will inevitably overlap, and they all deal with a different facet of immigrant rights. They are: Legal Services, Health Services, Education, Advocacy, and Community Building. We are specifically looking at organizations in the geographic areas of Somerville, Medford, Cambridge, and Chinatown. Our reasoning for these specific locations is that these are the communities that Tufts borders. We included Cambridge because there is a lot of activity happening there around immigrant rights, and it is also proximally close to the Tufts communities.

6. Assign research tasks to each student
Legal Services- Lukas
Health Services- Juhee
Education- Gonzalo
Advocacy- Corey
Community Building- Jon

7. Enter the network data on YouthMap

8. Begin discussing and analyzing the network map

9. Add more data to the map

10. Create a final product
