Introduction:
Sherman Alexie's Flight
deals with many aspects of
identity and what defines
who we are. "Call me Zits.
Everybody calls me Zits.
That's not my real name,
of course. My real name
isn't important. " Alexie gives the reader a lot to think about as to
who the main protgaonist really is and what defines him as a
person. He is, as many people are, judged by his appearance.
They say "the clothes define the man." Imagine that the
principle of your school wants to impose a dress code including
school uniforms. How would that make you feel? What would you
say to the principle? How would Zits or any of the identities he
embodies feel about this? This WebQuest will encourage ELA
students to explore various aspects of identity and how outward
appearance affects how people judge one another. After
reading this novel, exploring various fictional and non-fictional
texts, as well as researching the pros and cons of school uniforms,
students will create an opening statement for or against school
uniforms using supporting evidence.
