MC2 STEM High School is a project-based STEM school intent on preparing students for college and successful careers in STEM fields. Students are engaged in a dynamic, rigorous curriculum and project-based learning environment that will prepare them for the 21st century global economy. At any given moment you may find and MC2 STEM students designing and building an innovative, new audio system for an upcoming performance at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, or putting together a robot for the next city-wide robotics competition. Students at STEM spend time at NASA Glenn research center working with aerospace design, or in Arizona at the Biosphere doing ecological research. Here, if you can think it, you can do it!

On top of classes and projects, MC2 STEM will provide the students access to internships and apprenticeship opportunities to gain first-hand experience in specific professions to assist with career planning decisions for what to do after graduation. STEM also utilizes a year round academic calendar that more closely resembles a typical business calendar. This will facilitate a more productive learning environment and reinforce to our students what they can expect from “work life”. In addition, MC2 STEM High School has partnered with many institutions of higher education allowing our students to take college courses, simultaneously earning high school and college credits. This unique opportunity will provide for a seamless transition from High School to college or the workforce.

Superintendent Hefner
visits MC
2 STEM High School in Cleveland

State Superintendent Stan Heffner met last week with students and staff of the MC 2 STEM High School. The year-round school is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and is located on the campus of the GE Lighting World headquarters. With the school’s focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as higher education, students earn college credit from Cleveland State University or Cuyahoga Community College. MC 2 STEM High School offers rigorous, relevant instruction, and students earn credit based on 90-percent mastery of each subject, not seat time. Additionally, students have regular exposure to the STEM-related workforce as they partner and have lunch with General Electric engineers. GE volunteers have contributed more than 5,500 hours to the students in two years. Schools like these are the front-runners in moving Ohio toward college- and career-readiness for all students.

Bill & Melinda Gates FoundationMessage from Jeff Raikes, Chief Executive Officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation.

....MC-Squared is home to one of the fewer-than-50 fabrication labs, or fab labs, in the entire world. A fab lab’s computers run design software connected to cutting-edge production machinery—things like laser-powered etchers and robotic routers. One person called fab labs “technological sandboxes.”

Students at MC-Squared have used the fab lab to make their own solar-powered phone chargers. And that process is coupled with social science and humanities lessons about global energy policy and the history of energy consumption. ....
