Trust Activities

McKee Charitable Trust

The Trust has progressed significantly since it was formed by the then directors of the McKee Group of companies in 1968.

In the early days small grants were made to long serving staff of Lime & Marble Ltd and associate companies, as well as charitable bequests & post graduate bursaries in the fields of science & geology, also  secondary school uniform allowances to staff children. Some years later overseas travel scholarships were awarded to local people in the horticulture industry.

In 2008 the original Trust was split to form the McKee Charitable Trust and the McKee Trust, with the latter retained to provide for a few long serving staff.

The McKee Charitable Trust makes grants to selected local community organisations, mainly in the areas of social services, youth development and self help community projects.

  •  Tertiary scholarships are awarded to selected students from all colleges in the Nelson - Tasman - Golden Bay areas. $2,000 is awarded to each of four students for a period of three years subject to satisfactory progress.
  • Science and Mathematics prizes are made annually to all local secondary schools.
  • Grants have also been made to emergency funds of local colleges, as a reserve fund for disadvantaged students.
  • Youth development grants are also made each year for young people to attend Outward Bound, the Boyle River, and Whenuaiti Trust in Upper Moutere.
  • For many years the Nelson based New Zealand Composers Workshop has received a grant.
  • Annual Christmas grants are made to local institutions for the aged.

Earlier grants were made to the Suter Gallery (Nelson) to create the McKee Gallery, also to Nelson College to purchase their first computer.
In 1947 the McKee family gifted the coastal area at Ruby Bay to the district, which became the McKee Reserve, now a popular camping and picnic area.
