Louis is a positive, hard-working person and a great addition to the MYC community. He is always ready to participate in football, art, and Fresh Food Fridays. He is a pleasure to be around, and we love having him at the Center!

Join Us for McFarland Community Service Day!

    On Saturday, April 21st the McFarland Youth Center will participate in the annual McFarland Community Service Day for the 3rd year in a row! Youth are invited to meet at the McFarland Municipal Center at 8am to help wash ambulances and squad cars, help in the school forest and and food pantry, and enjoy free ice cream at the McFarland House Cafe!      March 11th-18th is National AmeriCorps Week, celebrating the thousands of AmeriCorps volunteers throughout the United States who have committed themselves to a year (or more) of service to their communities through AmeriCorps. At the MYC, we are lucky enough to have a PASS (Partners For After School Success) AmeriCorps member. Throughout Dane County, PASS members work in schools and community centers, assisting with afterschool programming, community service, and tutoring.
 
Thanks to our PASS member, Mark, for all he does for the MYC!

MYC Youth enjoy 2011 Spring Break Trips
 
    Not going anywhere for spring break? The MYC has you covered! We've got an awesome trip planned nearly every day during the 2012 Spring Break. We're kicking off break on Friday, March 23rd with our Celebration Day trip to Ultra Zone Laser Tag. All MYC youth who have completed 2 hours fo community service in 2012 and have had positive behavior at the MYC are invited to attend!
 
    On March 27th we'll head out to Eastgate Cinema for a movie, then to Vitense Golfland on the 28th, and Henry Vilas Zoo on the 29th! It'll be a great week! Permission slips are available now at the MYC.

MYC Youth Climb the Walls at
Boulder's Gym

    On Thursday, Febraury 9th, MYC youth headed to Boulder's Climbing Gym for an afternoon of climbing. After learning how to belay and support one another while climbing, youth had the opportunity to try lots of different climbs. Professional staff from Boulder's helped students challenge themselves with new climbs. Thanks to By Youth for Youth for helping to provide the funding for this trip through our Project Explore Grant!

                           volunteer appreciation dinner!    
 
    Congrats to all of our wonderful 2011 Student Volunteers! In 2011, MYC youth volunteered over 480 hours of their time in the community, for organizations such as the McFarland Food Pantry, the Dane County Humane Society, the McFarland Senior Outreach Coalition, the Great Country Inn & Suites, and more! We want to thank you for all your time and dedication--you have truly made a difference to the MYC and to your community!
 
    A special congratulations to 8th grade student Josh and 7th grade student Lexy, who will recieve a Presidential Service Award for their volunteer work in 2011. Josh volunteer over 75 hours of his time, and Lexy volunteered over 50 hours of her time! Great work Josh & Lexy!
 

 
Weather Alert: MYC Closing at 2pm on Friday, 1/20 due to snow.
As after-school activities have been canceled today, 1/20/12, the MYC is also closing at 2pm due to the snowstorm. We apologize for any inconvenience! We will reopen Monday during our usual hours!

 
January & February Field Trips and New Programs!

    Don't let the cold get you down! At the MYC we have plenty of exciting field trip opportunities and activities to keep your winter blues away!
 
    On Monday, January 16th, join us for the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Day of Service at the Institute of Discovery in Madison. We'll get to participate in lots of great activities, have lunch, and then head to the Second Harvest Food Bank to volunteer for the afternoon! On Tuesday, January 17th, we'll hold our 2nd Annual Youth Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, honoring students who volunteered 5 hours or more at the MYC in 2011. Youth and their families are invited to join us on the 17th from 5pm-6:30pm for pizza and an awards ceremony!
 
    On Monday January 23rd & Wednesday, February 1st we'll be introducing the first of our new Teen Yoga classes, taught by Waubesa Intermediate School teacher, Mrs. Dahl. Classes will be from 3:45-4:30. Also, on Tuesday, February 7th and February 14th, join our AmeriCorps member, Mark, for his new Creative Writing Circle!
 
    Finally, get these awesome February field trip opportunities on your calendar fast! Thursday, February 9th from 4-6pm we'll be heading to Boulder's Climbing Gym in Madison for 2 hours of climbing! On Friday, February 24th from 6:30-9:15pm, we'll be taking advantage of Badger Gymnastics Open Gym!

MYC Closed for WInter Break

    The McFarland Youth Center will be closed for Winter Break from Thursday,12/22-Monday, 1/2. We will reopen for 2012 on Tuesday, January 3rd. We've got lots of great activities planned for January, such as our FULL MONTH Iron Chef Cooking Competition, MLK Day of Service, a sledding trip, and Badger Gymnastics trip. MYC Cookie Dough Pick Up is Saturday, December 3rd

The McFarland Youth Center will be holding its' Annual Cookie Dough Pick Up/Christmas in the Village Open House on Saturday, December 3rd from 9am-12pm. All students who sold dough can pick it up anytime during the morning.

    All of us at the MYC want to say a big CONGRATS to 8th grade student Josh L., the WINNER of the 2011 MYC Cookie Dough Sale. Josh did an amazing job selling cookie dough to friends and family, around his neighborhood, and at the McFarland Schools, and sold over $1,000 of dough--67 tubs! Josh's Prime Time will be recieving a Pizza Party, and Josh will be entered into the I-pod drawing, as well as winning his very own 2 bags of ducks!

MYC Cookie Dough Sale Begins 10/24!

    The MYC Annual Cookie Dough Fundraiser will begin on Monday, 10/24! Our cookie dough fundraiser is our largest and most important fundraiser of the year, and helps us continue to provide high-quality educational and recreational programming for over 170 middle school students in McFarland each year!
 
    Call 838-3839 to order your cookie dough today, purchase from an MYC youth near you, or watch for our MYC Annual Newsletter in the mail during the 1st week of November (complete with a cookie dough order form!).
