                                                My Teaching Philosophy:

My philosophy as a teacher of English Language Arts revolves around student choice. All too often, student interest is lost when it comes to reading and writing because the mandatory topic given holds no interest or appeal for the student. The student should be an active participant in his or her role as a learner. By giving students a choice among several writing topics or novels, or even the choice to create their own topic or novel, the student is much more likely to have an interest, or even a passion for what they are writing and reading about. There are so many different forms and genres of writing that when given the chance to explore a wide range of these different styles, a student will hopefully find at least one style of writing that they enjoy in some way.

Personally, I get excited about reading and writing. From a young age I have always enjoyed writing creatively and reading good books; whether it is for school or simply for my own pleasure. I realize that not all forms of reading and writing are fun, and that some students do not find these skills enjoyable at all. However, I also believe that many students who claim to “hate” reading and writing say this because they lack confidence when it comes to the written word. Through a variety of lessons and the use of both a Reader's and a Writer’s Workshop in the classroom, I believe every student is capable of strengthening his or her confidence and skills in reading and writing.

It is important to me that my classroom be a place where my students feel comfortable. It is essential that my students realize that it is perfectly normal and acceptable to make mistakes during the learning process. After all, if there were not supposed to be mistakes and revisions in the classroom, then there would be no use for things like first drafts and peer editing. I see the mistakes one makes in class as opportunities which a person should learn from, not be punished for.

I want my students to be innovative, creative and motivated. As a teacher, it is my job to make sure that I provide my students with the right lessons and opportunities for that to happen. I never want my class to be a boring, monotonous place. I want students to learn and even have fun. Writing can be an amazing form of self expression. Reading can be an amazing way to inspire and use the imagination. I believe that students should be shown that writing is a valid response to the world around them, and reading is an invaluable tool that will be used every day. As history has proved, a good piece of writing can last forever!
