Teaching

I enjoy sharing my skills and our knowledge with others.  A long

careers involving the teaching of techniques, skills and creative

solutions give me the ability to teach the many techniques I employ

in a relaxed and easy to integrate format.  This is a hobby, it should

be fun.  Even as serious artists, it should be fun.  I live and teach in

the spirit of play.  My workshops and trunk shows demonstrate this

spirit.  Come play!

One Block Wonders – This is a serendipitous approach to design.

One piece of fabric does all the work because the fabric contains all

the colors and design elements.  You cut and sew one shape with

triangles forming hexagons or octagons and then design with these

kaleidoscopic blocks.  Because the quilts feature one repeated block,

design merely involves playing with colors and shapes within the

kaleidoscopes.

·        Hexagons – In 6 hours you will have created enough

kaleidoscopes to learn the fundamentals of kaleidoscopic

watercolors.  The hexagonal kaleidoscopes created from one

5 yard piece of fabric are enough to create a good sized lap

quilt.  This class will provide detailed instruction and the

opportunity to complete all aspects of the process from fabric

choice to finishing.  This free-wheeling, hands-on experience

both great fun and highly informative.  Although the results

are complex and elegant, the process is straightforward and

forgiving.

·        Octagons – In a 6 hour class, you will create both

octagonal blocks and magic diamonds.  Because the triangles

for octagons use a relatively narrow slice of fabric, each block

creates a pattern that is very different from the original fabric.

When octagons are coupled with magic diamonds, they fill

the entire surface with pattern and color in a way that no

other process can.  Less than 6 yards of fabric will provide

all you will need to create this magical quilt.

Cubes, Hollow and Otherwise – It is the feeling of dimension that

turns a hexagon into a cube, an illusion.  We’ve all seen cubes, but

what if they were open on one side, or all sides, or just sliced open.

What would you be looking at?  What if a cube were inside a cube?

How would it look?  In this 6 hour class, you will learn how to open

a cube in all directions and in many ways.  All you need are several

fat quarters each of light, medium and dark fabrics.  You will

complete at least 7 different forms of cubes and leave the class with a

good understanding of their vivid dimensionality as well as how you

might use them in your quilts.

Suitables – Remember that 38 regular sport jacket that your

husband loved in college and is just hanging in the closet collecting

dust.  Put it to better use as a custom crafted creation for you.  A

tailor starts with flat fabric and makes it round to fit a body.  In these

projects you start with a man’s suit and make it flat as fabric.

·        Suitable Totes – Not just your husband’s old jacket,

but don’t forget the beautiful suit that you just purchased

for your son’s confirmation, that he quickly outgrew.

Keep the memory of that special day.  In just 6 hours

turn that jacket into something special for you.  Carry

that man wherever you go!  It’s stylish, durable, useful

and just plain fun.

·        Evening Bags – Just when you think that men’s

trousers simply hang around, I found the perfect use

for those 34 regulars that will never see your husbands’

waistlines again.  This simple but elegant technique uses

all the wonderful tailoring detail of men’s trousers to

create your one-of-a-kind evening bag.  This 4 hour

class allows you to cut and complete an evening bag.

Take that man dancing tonight or to your next formal

affair.

·        Book Bags – For girls and boys, men and women to

carry books around in a fashion statement.  Six hours is

enough to create a one-of-a-kind book bag, strong

enough to carry books and a newspaper.  Perfect for

professors.

·        Pillows – Is your sofa looking bland and ordinary?

In 6 hours we can teach you to make a man you can lean

on.  Using a jacket and maybe even a pair of pants you

can create a novel pillow to sit proudly on your sofa.

This creation uses your husbands’ jackets before they

reach the rummage pile.  This is your opportunity to

include personal mementos and those little touches that

are special to you.  This is a particularly delightful class

where the process of creation is at least as much fun as

the enjoyment of the pillow you have made.
