Maxine Clarke

Maxine Beneba Clarke is a West Indian - Australian poet, writer and freelance journalist. She has written for The Age, The Big Issue, The Koori Mail, Sydney's Child, Crikey, Australian Art Collector, Cherrie and many other national publications
 
Maxine's short plays and poetry have been performed at venues and festivals across Australia, including The Riverside Theatres, Parramatta (2003), The Edge Theatre, Newtown (2004), The Arts Centre, Melbourne (2009), The National Young Writers Festival, Newcastle (2008), The Emerging Writers' Festival (2008 and 2009) and the Melbourne Writers Festival (2008).
 
Maxine's poetry chapbook Original Skin (2008) is published by Picaro Press. Her poetry has been published internationally, including in Voiceworks, The Paradise Anthology, Kunapipi and Unusual Work, and has been broadcast on Wordjammin' (2SER, Sydney), Max Headroom (RRR, Melbourne), Hip Sista Hop (3CR, Melbourne) and Spoken Word (3CR, Melbourne).
 
Maxine is the 2006 title holder of the Gleebooks/NSW Writers Centre Poetry Sprint, placed second in the Doris Leadbetter Poetry Cup (2007), is the current title holder of the Northern Notes Poetry Slam, and has been a finalist in the Melbourne Writers Festival Poetry Idol (2007 and 2008).
 
Maxine's first novel, Black Lazarus, was selected for the Overland Novel Search in 2008. She writes a poetry blog at slamup.blogspot.com and is a group blogger for Overland Literary Magazine at overland.org.au.
