House
All went well after a slightly sticky start after some confusion over
suitable accommodation for those unable to manage the tour of the house, they
ended up having coffee at the hotel where we were having lunch, and over how
payment was to be made. We ended up in a crocodile down the steep steps leading
up to the front door while the chatelaine went in search for the tin box in
which to deposit the money. Thankfully it wasn’t raining. Then as soon as the
penny dropped as to who we were and where we came from things improved and we
were given a full, instructive and unhurried tour of what is a very interesting
and important house.
A couple of points that seemed to capture particular interest were the
spyhole in the huge solid oak front door to see who was outside, and below an
even bigger hole for a blunderbuss to dispel unwelcome visitors, the latter
hole being lined with lead in case the barrel got too hot and set fire to the
door, and the fact that the main living room had only been redecorated once in
all the years and that in the 1930’s and was not likely to be done again in the
foreseeable future. A lesson for us all but bad news for interior
decorators.
The garden was not at its best as the weather was cloudy and damp and late
frosts had turned all the tops of the box edgings yellow thus giving them an
unusual two tone effect, but impressive none the less. For those who made it to
the tiny church in the grounds the usual memorials made interesting reading and
particularly reminded one of how precarious life was then by how many were for
infants or children or young adults.
Following the look around the garden we hotfooted it to The Holt Hotel
where a special carvery had been set up for us and where we found the special
non-tour four comfortably settled in the lounge. The lunch was various and
plentiful but as we seemed to be only clientele our custom must have been doubly
welcome.
Next year we are considering visiting Kelmscot Manor the home of William
Morris and an Arts and Craft mecca. Any comments or suggestions would be
welcome and addressed to Tony Sumner.
MRA QUIZ - MARCH 2010 The Quiz, organized by Beryl Saunders, was held on Saturday 6th March at Fosse Manor Conference Room, which was kindly made available by the Manager, Chris Gear, free of charge. It was well attended with ten tables of four each participating. The Quiz consisted of 10 Rounds together with an Interval Round plus a Food Round set by Chris Gear for which he gave a special prize. The dominance of the Steeles and the Holmes (winners in several previous Quizzes) was successfully challenged by the Greenhills and their guests the Bunstons who tied with them. In a true exhibition of sportsmanship they agreed to split the prize which was generously supplemented by Chris Gear. Numerous raffle prizes were won, and a most enjoyable evening was had by all (except the winners of the cabbage who will remain nameless). After a supplement from the Santander Charity Fund (arranged by Bob Fisher) a sum of £1,555 was donated to the Air Ambulance who presented a Certificate to the Residents’ Association to record the event.
