Background
Founded in July of 2006, NACODO was the culmination of a two-month community development initiative in Namuwongo. The program was initiated by two youth organizations, the Practicing Environmental Managers Organization (PEMO) and Forum on International Cooperation - University of British Columbia (FICUBC), which is a chapter of the Global Forum on International Cooperation (GFIC). A preliminary assessment was commissioned by FICUBC to be carried out by PEMO in the community of Namuwongo in Kampala, Uganda to identify various stakeholders and opportunities for community development programs.
After some initial deliberations, it was agreed to implement a Participatory Appraisal (PA) program in Namuwongo, to commence in early June of 2006. Community members were mobilizes to participate in the PA program and 53 representatives were elected to participate. These representatives attended daily meetings over the course of the next month and a half during which a number of PA tools, such as the creation of a community resource map and historical profile, were introduced. The result was a holistic body of work that describes the various challenges facing the community, their underlying causes, and identifies opportunities to address these challenges. The core of the PA program was the creation of a Community Action Plan (CAP) for future development initiatives in Namuwongo.
Having completed the PA program, the community was faced with the task of implenting the projects that it had identified as priorities. Once more representatives were elected by the community to serve on the Executive of a new Community Based Organization (CBO) to be called the Namuwongo Community Development Organization (NACODO). Within this executive various positions were elected, and the current officers are:
- Chairperson
- Mr . Ben Nfite
- Secretary
- Mr. George
- Treasurer
- Mr. Bosoco
NACODO has recently begun implementing its first development initiative in Namuwongo. The program, which focuses on improving the sanitation situation in the community, was identified as a priority by the community representatives in their CAP. The current program includes sensitization programs aimed at improving methods of waste disposal as well as weekly "community clean-ups" where community volunteers work to clear the drainage channels that cross the area, thus preventing flooding and accumulation of standing water that contributes to malaria incidence.
In its short existence as a CBO operating in Namwongo, NACODO has made a visible and substantial improvement in the quality of life for many community residents. Through the continued support of its partners and more importantly the community it was elected to serve, NACODO hopes to expand its sanitation programs in the future to find sustainable solutions to the problems identified in the CAP.
