Search & SEO

Google and the Search Formula
-In order to display websites that are pertinent and accurate in regards to the end-users search terms, Google uses the Page Rank formula.  This formula sets a numerical value to the importance of any web page that is included in the search.  Google keeps a tally of the link leading to and from websites and uses this information, along with other factors to deliver result to the end-user.  In order to collect this data from web sites, Google uses a crawler.  What a crawler does to help the search process is that it scours and indexes every website that it can.  It collects data including the links that point to and from websites.  It also collects data on word usage and meta tags.  Meta tags are used by web developers to give a list of keywords that make it easier for search engine to understand what information is displayed on their websites.  (ianrogers.net)

Other Examples

-While Google is the most popular search engine, it's methods are not ubiquitous across the web.
One example of interesting search engine is Cuil.

This search engine was developed by former Googlers.  It is different in both philosophies and the way is searches for data and displays it.  Instead of the vertical list Google uses to display its information, Cuil uses columns (2 or 3, user defined) to display pictures and synopsies of each website.  Instead of concentrating on the popularity, Cuil looks at the quality of information and relevance to the search topic.  Cuil also does not collect information from those who use the

search engine.  Google collects information on each search that is made through it.  It records information such as, IP adresses,

Another example of a search engines that deffer from the Google algorithm is Yahoo!.  This uses a paid inclusion program that will include extra weight on the search terms of any paid affilliate page.  (seobook.com)

Some engines choose to display their information that makes them unique and stand apart from competitors.  Some of these include KartOO and MsDewey.

KartOO is a flash based search engine.  It display search results in a visual manner, a web of data to be frank.  Your search word is located in the middle of this web and the variants and similar subjects are displayed branching out from the center.

Optimization

-Since search engines have become the definitive way of finding information on the web, people have started businesses to help people further their ranks in search results.  One such company, Sage Rock is run by Sage Lewis.  Here are the 10 expectations for search engine optimization, according to Sage.
1.  Aging Delay - 6 to 12 month period of ignorance from Google for new domains.
2.  Links, links, links! - Quality links are required to even register on a Google search.
3.  Google owes you nothing.
4.  Relevance - Site must relevant to the search and offer something that others don't.
5.  Keywords - Must use keywords in the site's content
6.  Patience - It takes as long as it takes.
7.  More Patience - Stick with it.
8.  Singularity - Multiple domains will not help.
9.  Honesty - Don't hide content.
10.  Trust - Stick with your SEO for at least a year

Google-opoly

A company called SearchKing took advantage of the Google algorithm and tried to game the system.  This is a very lucrative act because sites would pay huge amounts to get onto the front page of Google, expecting capital in return.  Google saw this as  way to take advantage of the most popular search engine in the world in order to gain profits.  SearchKing pressed charges because Google reduced their PageRank score and caused them to be difficult to find with a keyword search and there for lower the value of their company.  Google won the leagal battle because it is a private comapany had the right to free speech, the application of which was used un regards of "arrangment of data."

Google in China

By request of the Chinese government, Google agreed to filter the results of the Google China website, google.cn.  This happened because China requested filters on certain keywords to promote image that reflected well-being of Chinese culture.  Google had to accept this demand or China would filter Google from the Chinese internet.
