Anyone can google up the Pantheon and get results on its history, structural significance and pages of high quality images in less than 0.38 seconds. The internet serves as a perfect substitute for gaining knowledge of these foreign monuments. However, it’s a different experience when you learn about the Pantheon by actually viewing it face-to-face, standing inside of it and looking up at the oculus and understanding why this historical structure is the essence of classical Roman architecture.Being able to learn about architecture has always been something that I’ve been interested in. Unfortunately, there is no specific curriculum at UC San Diego that offers any classes regarding architecture. Thus, having this opportunity to actually travel to Rome and participate in this learning experience was definitely a rewarding feeling for me and a memory that I will never forget. Just by traveling abroad this summer, I was able to develop and build lasting friendships with the students in the program and, together, explore the endless excitement of Rome. Whether it be climbing 323 steps to the top of St. Peters Basilica and being able to see all of Vatican City, enjoying the many delicious Italian luncheons in Florence, going on late night gelato trips near the Viale di Trastevere, sitting in San Marcos Plaza in Venice to watch the fireworks of the Redentore festival, or taking an hour long bus ride to Noche de Roma for a festive night of salsa dancing with my classmates … everything — every moment — has been completely memorable. Nevertheless, this experience would not have been possible without our Professor. Professor Pasquale not only made this trip educational, but most importantly made this experience a fun, eventful ‘learning vacation’. He not only gave us knowledgeable insight into classical architecture and engineering but also opened us up to the rich culture, the native lifestyle, the local food and the opportunity to experience Rome in a way that no tour guide or travel program could possibly top. This experience will absolutely broaden and enhance your appreciation of classic Roman architecture and make you fall in love with beauty of this magnificent city. If you have an interest in this program or have any slight doubt whether this program is for you, I can tell you that you will not regret your choice in choosing to study abroad in Rome with Professor Pasquale. Just do it already! Melody is a junior at UCSD (Muir College) studying urban studies and planning. She participated in Math in Rome 09. |
