Mathematical Beauty in Rome provides a unique experience that allows students to study abroad while still focusing on a math and science curriculum. The program provides a first hand experience on Italian culture, history, FOOD, architecture, and the people! It is truly a once in a lifetime experience that every student, regardless of your major, should apply to. It leaves lasting impressions and asks us to question the mathematical ingenuity, yet simplicity behind some world famous pieces such as the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Roman aqueducts. I had an amazing time in Rome. Not only was the curriculum fun and interesting, I was challenged to think about the design and construction methods used by the Romans over 2000 years ago. Being able to study the buildings first hand in Italy is what made the trip worthwhile. What better way to study the Colosseum than to go visit it? Our program also went to visit modern engineering marvels such as Michelangelo's dome, Brunelleschi's dome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Roman aqueducts, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and much more! I left with a more global perspective on design style and construction. Truly one of the best experiences I've had during my college career at UCSD. Marcelino graduated from UCSD (Muir College) in 2008 with a degree in structural engineering. He participated in Math in Rome 08. |
