This is the first event on Mathematical Chemistry organised in Latin America. It is the result of further discussions between Guillermo Restrepo (Universidad de Pamplona, Colombia), Subhash C. Basak (University of Minnesota Duluth, USA) and José L. Villaveces (Universidad de los Andes, Colombia). The objective is to spread the scope of events on Mathematical Chemistry organised by Subhash C. Basak and collaborators using two Indo-US forums, i.e. Indo-US Workshop on Mathematical Chemistry and Indo-US Lecture Series on Discrete Mathematical Chemistry, to countries in Latin America. The two Indo-US forums already organised nine events with participants from three to five continents in each one of them. But these events are not always accesible to scholars from distant corners of the globe, particularly becuase of the high cost of travel and conference attendance. These are the reasons why it is desirable to have Mathematical Chemistry events in other continents including South America. That is why Guillermo Restrepo, José L. Villaveces and Subhash C. Basak came up with the idea of a Mathematical Chemistry Workshop Series involving primarily North and South American countries. Guillermo Restrepo travelled to India in 2005 to participate in the Forth Indo-US Workshop on Mathematical Chemistry (Pune, India). His discussions there with the leading scientists in Mathematical Chemistry sowed the seed for the proposed First Mathematical Chemistry Workshop of the Americas to be organised in Bogota, Colombia, August 21-22, 2009. A summary of the previous Workshops and Lecture Series on Mathematical Chemistry is found at http://www.nrri.umn.edu/indousworkshop/; www.nrri.umn.edu/indouslecture
In this workshop the idea is to bring together leading scientists involved in basic and applied research in the fields of Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Chemistry, and Computational Chemistry. Results of the latest research in these fields will be presented along with important applications of mathematical and computational approaches to chemistry, chemical combinatorics, chemical graph theory, drug discovery, environmental toxicology, partial orderings in chemistry, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR), quantitative molecular similarity analysis (QMSA), chemoinformatics and bioinformatics (including genomics, proteomics, systems biology, and metabolomics). The workshop will begin on August 21st and run through noon on the 22nd in Bogota, Colombia. The meeting is sponsored jointly by the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), the Universidad de Pamplona (Colombia), the Natural Resources Research Institute of the University of Minnesota Duluth (USA), the University of Minnesota (USA) and the International Society of Mathematical Chemistry. Guillermo Restrepo, Laboratorio de Química Teórica, Universidad de Pamplona (Colombia), José L. Villaveces, Vicerrector for Research, Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) and Subhash C. Basak, Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota Duluth (USA) are the chairmen of the joint meeting.
