The Cable Equation for Modeling the Axon of a Neuron

Neurons are the basic building blocks of the body’s central nervous system which enables communication within the body and interaction with the world around us. For this reason, study of neurons and how they work is crucial to understanding ourselves.

Mathematical models are useful for modeling and predicting behavior. There exists a large variety of models in relation to the nervous system. The study of these models could potentially cover lifetime. As a result, we will be limiting our research to the Cable Equation as it is used to model wave propagation along the axon of the neuron. The purpose of this site is to inform about the biology behind the model and explain and consider the model in the context of the axon.
