What is a digital story?

A digital story is orally narrated story read to a visually appealing pictorial slide show.  The pictures are intended to add a second layer of meaning.  A subtle audio soundtrack is usually added in the background to help create the appropriate mood.

In a educational setting, digital stories can be used to greatly enhance student interest in writing personal stories because they get a chance to publish their story as a "movie".  Furthermore, creating a digital story is very motivating because students love to use technology, be creative, and really have their story "told".

This unit of instruction teaches teachers how to instruct their students in using Photo Story 3 from Microsoft to create a digital story.  This software can be downloaded for free from Microsoft's website.

Click here to download Photo Story 3.

After it is installed, Photo Story 3 is a very intuitive and easy program to use.  For a free program, it is surprisingly powerful and full featured.  A typical project screen is shown below. The screenshot below shows the interface for recording audio narration on the digital story.
