Now that the Traveston Crossing Dam is off the agenda there is a pressing need to rebuild the landscape, businesses and community fabric of the Mary Valley and address the serious water planning, land management and environmental issues facing the Mary catchment as a whole. This is a chance for local people to become active citizens in creating a future for the Mary that reflects the wishes of local people. The greatest chance for success will come from the various local interests in the Mary finding common ground and cooperating towards a future vision for the Mary that can shape local, state and federal government plans for the region.
This website is part of the process. Start by outlining your vision of the future of the Mary Valley, or sharing your experiences of the current buyback and lease negotiations in the Mary in the online forum (hosted by SaveTheMaryRiver). You might to like to contact members of the renewal team via the directory or look at the list of of current projects and activities underway and make contact with those that you are interested in. There is a calendar of coming events, meeting dates and deadlines, a collection of relevant local documents to download and a list of web-based resources to access. These resources are periodically added to and updated, so to is worthwhile checking to see what new information appears there.
Specific issues regarding planning and leases should be taken up with the Department of Infrastructure and Planning and with local government (see links at the left).
On the 4th June, the State Government announced that all land owned by QWI in the Mary Valley would be handed over to the Department of Infrastructure and Planning for a staged release of land. The land repurchase scheme for original owners was extended to 30 June 2010.
An updated list of local State Government contacts is available here.
