CHAPTER 12 NOTES—MAY 4, 2009
Digital Literacy: Technology in the English Class Brave New Classrooms Technology Standards: What Teachers Should Know Implications for the English Class How Teachers Can Use Computers Endnote: New Frontiers
Brave New Classrooms -computers have changed how we work and how we think. -what once was simply a computer is now a thin contraption that allows you to enter a different world that allows you to check your mail at any time, take pictures, talk on-line, watch and create movies, and store several files.
Technology Standards: What Teachers Should Know -1. Technology operations and concepts -demonstrate intro. Knowledge and understanding. -demonstrate continual growth in technology knowledge. -2. Planning and designing learning environments and experiences -teachers plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities. -they plan strategies to manage student learning in a technology-enhanced environment. -3. Teaching, Learning and the Curriculum -teachers utilize assignments or tasks that incorporate technology to fulfill CA standards. -4. Assessment and evaluation -teachers apply technology in assessing student learning -5. Productivity and professional practice -teachers apply technology to increase productivity. -teachers use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers. -6. Social, ethical, legal & human issues -teachers promote safe and healthy use of technology resources.
Implications for the English Class -Gilster calls it “digital literacy” -includes the skills of suing computers and navigating the internet and critically reading the material. -sometimes it’s ok that they know more than us. -feel free to allow the students to utilize the computers to complete presentations, assignments, etc. -we can have our students complete a multimedia presentation -email: allows students to correspond with eachother. -Internet as Brainstoring: now we have remarkable search engines online. We now have drop-down menus that provide us with other search options. -internet for research: now it is our job as educators to help our students sift through all their information to find the important material. -presentations: public speaking provides one of the most powerful and engaging opportunities to incorporate technology. -writing: computers can be used to aid in the revision and general writing process. -students can creat publications, poetry anthologies, presentations.
How Teachers Can Use Computers -students should always practice their presentations before they perform them because something could malfunction. -teachers should always have a backup plan when working with technology. -students should have adequate and equal access to machines capable of doing the assigned work.
Endnote: New Frontiers -technology is changing our notions about the role of the teacher and our relationship with the text. -what constitutes “reading” becomes the question with the development of new technology. -if a student reads several websites, does that count as meeting the state requirement of reading? -we must be able to adapt our teaching skills to meet with this demand for technology.
Our entire course this semester has focused on this chapter: the importance of being an English educator that incorporates technology into the classroom. It is up to teachers to up-date their lessons and remain up to speed on today’s technology. There are several ways that we can incorporate technology into our daily conductivity of class. We can communicate to our student’s parents via e-mail, we can assign a project using technology, we can assess our students in a new way, and we can search for new topics to cover on the computer. Since times are changing we are forced to adapt and conform.
