Google University (Google Design School)

This is an idea that a few people have talked about and that I originally blogged about a few months ago. Recently a friend of a friend showed some interest and I heard about another project from a former professor in which he is developing a new design school.

The basic premiss is that Google, and a number of other major companies, have some good ideas about design and related things. Many of them
have some kind of documented principles (Google UX and Google Philosophy) which could be used to act as some kind of core.

Other aspects of the idea as it stands include incorporating internal (and external) expertise to create a seminar based lecturing system. Learning by example of implementation, and learning by exposure to people who really grock good concepts. This aspect of the organisation could also include content sharing and taking advantage of free media which is now available from many great sources such as TED, Google Tech Talks, iTunesU, including many universities around the world and of course Podcasts.

Creating a free university for any subject, given these tools, is not out of the question. I think one more directed towards design is appropriate, especially if it is related to the Google documents above, because there is such a strong need for creative and flexible thinking.

Contact me with ideas please. Brainstorms would be fun.

I think separating physical experience and skill from theoretical development could be cool. Just offering experience at doing stuff, from using a drill, to flying a plane, to running interviews.

Also, I think a system like this will really thrive off building its self. All work must be relevant to future students.
