Changes to Expectations at KAIST

posted ‎‎3 Jun 2009 06:05‎‎ by Mark Whiting

Recently, my professor at KAIST has taken a position as Vice Mayor of Seoul City so I forced to find a new one. At this time my research is still young so I am quite flexible to choose on the basis of my interests alone. My current hope is to maintain the flexible approach to work and learning I have been able to take this far and hopefully to meet some new people and become part of a new lab here. At the same time I am considering the options change can provide :-)

I also just started a summer class with ZOZ (?) who allegedly was on some Discovery Channel TV show at some point. The class is about prototyping and hardware hacking and it is a lot of fun.

Lastly, I am of course still looking for clients and internship opportunities. Contact me if you are interested.

Arriving in KAIST

posted ‎‎28 Jan 2009 19:01‎‎ by Mark Whiting

I am now at KAIST in Daejeon, Korea. I am embarking on a masters of design management and I have just been given a desk and monitor to work with.

I will begin a research blog soon.

I am still working as a consultant though my new work as a masters student may interfere occasionally. Contact me for further details and arrangements.

Moving to Korea

posted ‎‎14 Dec 2008 14:17‎‎ by Mark Whiting   [ updated ‎‎14 Dec 2008 14:29‎‎ ]

KAIST University in Daejeon Korea.

I will be moving to Korea in mid January. This will not effect my work much as I will still be able to travel.

The aim of the move is to pursue a Masters in Design Management and Strategy at KAIST.

It would be great to meetup with people in Korea. I will be living in Daejeon, about 4 hours south of  Seoul.

KAIST Offer and Prototype Thinking

posted ‎‎14 Nov 2008 13:03‎‎ by Mark Whiting   [ updated ‎‎16 Nov 2008 06:00‎‎ ]

2 things of interest.

I got an offer from KAIST (more on Wikipedia).

I have started a section on this site (Prototype Thinking) which aims to help build new ideas and projects. I would love feedback on this and on any of the projects inside or suggestions for Quotes and other resources to link.

Lastly, I really want to implement comments on this site but google have made it so I can not unless I make other aspects of the site open for user edits as well. I hope they fix it.

I just made public the 10 to 100 project site that our little team used. It is still closed to internal editors but if you have any ideas please use the contact me form and I will give you an account.

About Me Updates

posted ‎‎3 Nov 2008 09:13‎‎ by Mark Whiting

Today I added a page to the About Me section which talks of my fundamental ideology in design. I titled this section My Thinking on Design and I have included one paragraph here.

"I strongly uphold a sense of “honest information": quite simply, the clarity, relevance, and truthfulness of data and how it is used to make decisions. I think “honest information" and systems are a key to both good human interaction and truly sustainable design. One aspect of design that exemplifies this idea, to me, are the design principles which drive open formats: they are designed to do just enough and not more in order to maximise transparency, simplicity of interface, and extensibility."

Project 10 to the 100

Google announced a project recently which asks participants create ideas that help a lot of people. Google is offering 10 Million in seed funding to the winning idea.

I have assembled a small team and we are currently brainstorming possible projects for submission. If you are interested in taking part please contact me

The video below explains more about the project.

Right now I am searching for a way to spend my time for the next few years. I am considering either working or studying. Currently I am interested in a university in Korea and I have recently applied for jobs in various other places. If you have any need for a designer like me please contact me.

A New Homepage

posted ‎‎14 Sep 2008 14:35‎‎ by Mark Whiting

I am in the process of migrating my homepage to Google Sites and consolidating various aspects of my online life into one palace. I suspect it will not be completely finished for some time.
