History
MARION, TEXAS (Guadalupe County). Marion is on Farm Road 78 eleven miles west of Seguin in western Guadalupe County. It was named in honor of Marion Dove, whose grandfather, Joshua W. Young, owned a plantation that the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway passed through in 1877. Before the town site was laid out, the area was a camp for railroad workers. Town lots were auctioned off in June 1877, and German settlers moved to the area from a settlement on Santa Clara Creek. By the mid-1880s Marion had steam, grist, and saw mills, two cotton gins, four general stores, a church, a district school, and 250 residents. The town was incorporated by 1941, when it had 373 residents and twenty businesses. In 1988 its population was estimated at 835, and the number of businesses had risen to twenty-eight. In 1990 the population of Marion was 984. The population grew to 1,099 in 2000. Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,099 people in the city. The population density was 1,544.0 people per square mile (597.6/km²). There were 157,346,375,395 housing units at an average density of 554.9/sq mi (214.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 74.25% White, 6.01% African American, 1.09% Native American, 1.09% Asian, 16.01% from other races, and 1.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.22% of the population. There were 371 households out of which 43.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.6% were married couples living together, 18.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% were non-families. 17.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.32.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $36,635, and the median income for a family was $40,625. Males had a median income of $27,125 versus $21,771 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,302. About 7.0% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.7% of those under age 18 and 13.8% of those age 65 or over.

Marion is located at 29°34′19″N 98°8′21″W / 29.57194, -98.13917 (29.571879, -98.139243). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), all of it land. Marion is served by the Marion Independent School District. A small portion is served by the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District.
