Marie McMarrow
Dear Friends:
I am pleased to inform you that songs from Volume 1 of "XAYMACA, Sounds From the Hills of Jamaica - An Anthology of Jamaican Folk and Art Songs," are finally available. I have made things easy for you by making the mp3 sound tracks available for online purchase at:
I have also included sound clips of older recordings, in response to my market survey. I hope you will enjoy them.
I have provided below song backgrounds and text translations as they are sung in the original dialect.
Some of the Maroon songs were collected by Dr. Olive Lewin (Jamaican Folk Singers [J.F.S] founder) and Hazel Ramsey McClune of the J.F.S. I was a proud member of this group for 12 years and enjoyed the experience of folk music field research with Dr. Lewin. There are many tales to tell . . . but that is a different story.
Please feel free to share this information and music with your family and friends. Welcome ! Dis Long time Gal me never see you! Words of a popular greeting song included in XAYMACA, Sounds from the Hills of Jamaica, Volume 1. Consider this(for those not already acquainted) your first introduction to Jamaican dialet. Please note that I have translated close to the English language so that you can read comfortably.
