Currently, I am working as Inspector at the FOD Financiën. This year, I am an intern at the Central Taxation Office of Leuven, where I help individuals with their taxes, and perform tax inspections. In this internship-year, I also get the opportunity to follow several interesting training sessions on the subjects of accountancy, income tax etc. Previously, I was a PhD student in the research group QLVL at the K.U.Leuven, where I worked on extensions of so-called word space models in lexical semantics. Earlier, I have completed my MSc-studies at the ILLC at the University of Amsterdam, with a thesis on the empirical falsification of traditional 'arguments from poverty of stimulus' (as invoked by the nativist/generative tradition in linguistics), by showing how an empirical, usage-based framework like (Unsupervised) Data-Oriented Parsing can account for the phenomena used in these arguments. For my bachelor, I studied English and Latin linguistics and literature at the K.U.Leuven, where I obtained my bachelor's degree with a thesis on a formal semantic and corpuslinguistic account of the Latin universal quantifiers omnis and totus. Also in Leuven, I frequently spent time at the Centre for Computational Linguistics, which sparked my interest in computational linguistics.
By functioning as a teaching assistent for quite a few courses now (see Teaching), I have discovered that I enjoy teaching at least as much as doing research.
On a more personal note, my 'significant other' is Lorenz Demey, also a PhD student at the K.U.Leuven, at the Centre for Logic and Analytical Philosphy. In my free time, I enjoy cooking, knitting, reading and participating in quizzes with "Team Kafka". Furthermore I'm also very interested in politics and social issues. Finally, I love playing with my cavalier king charles spaniel, Kafka. We go to dog school together for agility training, which we both enjoy very much!
