Urs Buhler, tenor, humors City Weekend's gaga editors before the operatic quartet's Shanghai show
We admit we had to google Il Divo, but the chance to interview an international "operatic boy band" seemed too good to pass up. With a mere two years under their belts, these four male vocalists, David Miller (American), Sebastian Izambard (French), Urs Buhler (Swiss) and Carlos Marin (Spanish), have attracted a massive following with their Italian, Spanish and English operatic covers of pop and love songs such as Mariah Carey's "Without You" and The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." To date, they have sold over 13 million albums worldwide. Here, Urs Buhler, a former rocker-turned-opera singer (he's the sexy one on the far left below), takes a break from his Christmas weekend to entertain City Weekend's editors before the January 24th Shanghai show.
1. City Weekend: What's the first thing you want to do when you get to Shanghai? What kind of reputation do we have? Urs Buhler: I would love to try some authentic Chinese food and gather in as much of the atmosphere as possible. As far as reputation, all we know is that things are changing at a rapid rate within all of Asia, so we come here with an open mind.
City Weekend: あなたが上海に来たらまず最初にしたいことは何ですか？上海について、どういう印象を持っていますか？
Urs Buhler: 上海に着いたら、本物の中国料理を食べたいです。アジアは全域で全てのものが急速に変わりつつあると聞いているので、素直な気持ちでその雰囲気を感じたいです。
2. CW: We're beautiful here, but which country has the most beautiful women? Would you say that most of your fans are women? UB: Women are all beautiful no matter which country they are from. Most of our fans are women, maybe because our music is romantic.
CW: この国の女性は美人ですが、どの国の女性が一番美しいと思いますか？あなたがたのファンは、大部分が女性ですよね？
UB: どこの国でも、女性は全員美しいです。私たちの曲はロマンチックなので、ファンはほとんど女性です。
3. CW: How do you keep the songs fresh after performing them so many times? UB: For us, our songs are like our babies - we can never get sick of them. Once we get together and perform, we compliment each other so well that the songs feel like new each time.
CW: 数多くパフォーマンスしたあとも、曲に対して新鮮な気持ちを保つためにはどうしていますか？
UB: 私たちにとって、曲は自分のベビーのようなものです。だからうんざりすることはありません。パフォーマンスをするたびに新鮮に感じるということに、お互い敬意を抱いています。
4. CW: Do you sing in the shower? UB: Oh yeah, all [the] time! I find music to be such a joy and pleasure that I try to wake the neighbors when I get the chance.
CW: 雨の中で歌いたくなったりしますか？
UB: ああ、もちろん、いつでも！私は音楽を、チャンスがあれば周りの人を揺り起こそうとするような、歓喜に満ちた楽しみだと思っています。
5. CW: What's your favorite iPod playlist? UB: Generally rock from the 80s and 90s, though I love opera, too. Occasionally I become inspired to listen to pop or disco from my teen years. It makes me nostalgic.

6. CW: You guys are hot. Tell us about your pre-performance primping routines. UB: Carlos bases his look on 'Miami Vice.' He's Spanish,and double breasted suits from Armani do it for him. He's always got his anti-wrinkle creams. David is a particular fan of Diesel hoodies with jeans. On stage, he wears Prada or Dolce & Gabbana. He likes jewelry: earrings, necklaces, bracelets, you name it. Sebastian tries out his wilder ideas at H&M for a sensible price and then buy a similar look somewhere like Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana or Miu Miu. As for myself, I'm stuck in the 80s. I haven't really moved on from what I wore as a teenager. I still go for jeans and cowboy boots as everyday wear. Think Bon Jovi and you have my style.
CW: あなた方はカッコいいですよね。普段はどんなものを着ているのか、教えてください。

7. CW: What's your craziest fan encounter? UB: One time after a TV appearance, a girl passed Sebastian a vibrator to autograph. Another time, a British fan had printed a full length picture of Carlos in correct scale. She told us that she sleeps with the picture.
CW: 出会った中で、最もクレイジーなファンはどんなでしたか？

9. CW: We all make mistakes. Any onstage bloopers you'd care to dish? UB: I just love the moment when Carlos said, "I never expected to have so much sex," live on a television show. It was really early in the morning and the interviewer had asked how we felt to sell so many records. Carlos meant to say, "I never expected to have so much success," but he somehow choked on it and said, "I never expected to have so much s-s-sex."
CW: 誰でも間違うことがります。あなたは失敗を気にしますか？

10. CW: You guys spend a lot of time together. Do you ever argue? UB: I wouldn't say we argue, but there were misunderstandings at the beginning because we speak different languages and are from different cultural backgrounds. It's much better now though, as we have spent more time together in the studio and on the road.
