There’s a Whole ‘Lot’ Up On the ‘Block’ at the D23 Expo

I sure hope that you’ve been saving your pennies, and if you’ve haven’t been, you still have some time. Because have I got a scoop for you! That’s right, I have the actual list and even some of the images of the lots set for the auction block come Saturday, Aug. 20, as part of the D23 Expo 2011 Live and Silent Auction.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to make the magic come alive? Our artists know firsthand, that’s for sure. They say that birds of a feather flock together, so here’s a behind-the-scenes look at artist Kevin Kidney who – in my opinion – is never one to ruffle any feathers, but in this case he’s putting the final touches on the Pirate Barker Bird, replicated in exquisite detail from the parrot which appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction in Magic Kingdom Park at the Walt Disney World Resort. What else, you ask? How about out-of-this-world experiences, like a tour of the newly re-mastered Star Tours – The Adventures Continue attraction or go behind the scenes of the Walt Disney Animation Studios for a one-of-a-kind advance screening of Disney’s “Naughty vs. Nice,” the sequel to the beloved ABC special “Prep & Landing,” where you’ll find out the inspiration behind it all with the producer and directors of this holiday classic. Maybe you’d like to explore Walt’s Hollywood? Or take a guided tour of the Walt Disney Archives… It doesn’t stop there. That’s just a sampling of some of the experiences being offered this year.

Many of our Disney-inspired artists were also eager to hop on board, creating original pieces and custom items in a variety of different mediums. You’ll see creations from artists such as Dave Avanzino, David Bird, David Christiana, Ken Crow, Jody Daily, Chip Foose, David Garibaldi, Kevin Kidney, Greg McCullough and Larry Nikolai, among others.

Up next, artifacts and props that are sure to draw some attention, from pirate skulls and cannons to materializing ghosts, from wild jungle animals to a wonderland of displays. Is that all? Of course not. This year, we are excited to host a Silent Auction experience, also taking place on Aug. 20. I see spots, sharp teeth, things of beauty, film and TV props and a statue familiar to all. First Look: Jasmine’s Flying Carpets Makes Royal Debut at Tokyo DisneySea

We’re thrilled to report that our newest attraction at Tokyo DisneySea, Jasmine’s Flying Carpets, has made its official debut and today we’re sharing a first look with Disney Parks Blog readers.

Themed to the Disney film “Aladdin,” Jasmine’s Flying Carpets is a ride attraction where guests soar over Jasmine’s garden on a flying carpet. You can maneuver your vehicle up and down and tilt the vehicle forward and backward, as if flying your own magical carpet.

Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Director Chuck Ballew says you’ll want to look for what he calls “the most beautiful part of the attraction” – a peacock fan effect on the top of the fountain. The attraction also looks amazing at night, where it comes to life with 15 different color sequences that animate as the carpets travel around the fountain.

Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence Share Memories at Disneyland Park

Recently, Joey Lawrence and Melissa Joan Hart, co-stars of the ABC Family comedy “Melissa & Joey,” spent the day at Disneyland park taping television segments to air on ABC Family which feature some of their favorite Disney memories.

One special memory for Melissa was experiencing “it’s a small world” with her grandmother. And Joey recalled finally being able to go on Space Mountain as a child.

Together, they made at least one new memory that they can take back with them to the set of their hit show – a chalk portrait from New Orleans Square!

More Disney Magic for Boys & Girls Clubs Children

Last night, four families from Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida got a chance to attend the Orlando Magic-Miami Heat basketball game at Orlando, Florida’s Amway Center.

Prior to the game, Boys & Girls Clubs children Lorenzo White (13), Germaine Childs (9) and Tyasia Childs (6) posed with the giant Sailor Mickey Mouse balloon located outside the Disney Atrium at the new Amway Center. The family recently sailed onboard Disney’s newest cruise ship, Disney Dream, as part of a special Benefit Preview Cruise which raised $750,000 in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida.

As a “Champion of the Community” and the “official cruise line of the Orlando Magic,” Disney Cruise Line was featured prominently throughout the game, including the 65-foot-high Sailor Mickey Mouse balloon from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which made its first non-parade appearance in Central Florida last night and was located outside of the Disney Atrium.

Cuddle Up This Valentine’s Day at Disney Parks

What Disney characters inspire love? That question is something Denise Edelmaier, Product Developer for Dolls and Plush, asked as she began developing this year’s Valentine’s Day plush. I’m thinking she also asked how much cuteness she could add this year as these plush are adorable. I particularly love all of the details to which I learned is all part of storytelling.

“Each year, I like including Mickey and Minnie in our Valentine’s Day plush assortment,” explained Denise. “They are the quintessential Disney couple. Mickey and Minnie have a retro look this year which complements their festive attire well. That retro or vintage look is very popular in the marketplace right now.”

The colorful pink and red fabric that Denise mentions is found in elements on all four plush – from Duffy’s shorts to Minnie’s hat to Bolt’s collar. I particularly like the rose in Bolt’s mouth (then again, I’m a romantic).

“Last year, we created Marie from ‘The Aristocats’ for Valentine’s Day,” explained Monty Maldovan, the Disney Design Group artist responsible for developing artwork for plush. “This year, it made sense to have a dog like Bolt. I added some fun details to him like a heart with lightning bolt or the collar tag that says, ‘Love Struck.’”

Now that is funny. I enjoyed discovering those details once I got past the initial “he is so cute” reaction I first had while photographing him.

Another detail I liked finding was the quiver of arrows on Duffy’s back. I’m guessing that Cupid now carries a quiver of Duffy the Disney Bears like the one pictured at the top. Once again, he is too cuddly and cute (who wouldn’t fall in love holding him?).

Monty continued his thoughts about development.

“We started developing these items around Valentine’s Day last year,” said Monty. “The challenge for me was finding ways to incorporate that unique fabric print. We didn’t want any of the print to go to waste. I’m happy with the results as the plush look great together. Yet they are even stronger as individual items.”

I asked Denise if she had a glimpse into Valentine’s Day 2012.

“There will be two items next year featuring some beautiful nighttime dogs,” answered Denise. “But that is all I can say for now.”

Waterfront District ‘Hyperion Wharf’ Among Plans for Downtown Disney

How about that? New dining, shopping and entertainment experiences are in the works for Downtown Disney and today we’re sharing a first look at what to expect in the future for the 120-acre complex. Look closely and you’ll see that Pleasure Island will evolve into a vibrant waterfront district called “Hyperion Wharf.”

The district will come to life with a nostalgic yet modern take on an early 20th century port city and amusement pier. By day, stylish boutiques and innovative restaurants will draw you in and by night, thousands of lights will transform the area into an electric wonderland.

Taking its name from Hyperion, the Greek god of light, as well as the street on which Walt Disney built his first major animation studio, the wharf district will also feature a relaxing lakeside park and enhanced pedestrian walkways. And its diverse eateries will expand dining availability at Downtown Disney by more than 25 percent.

Along with the new wharf district, other projects are underway at Downtown Disney, including:

An extensive renovation of Lego Imagination Center, which will increase its overall footprint by nearly 3,500 square-feet and add new Lego exterior models featuring scenes from classic Disney movies.
Enhancements at AMC Theatres that will take the movie-going experience at Downtown Disney to the next level with new digital technology, a Concession Stand of the Future and Florida’s first Fork & Screen Theater; and…
Numerous new or renovated retail shops and merchandise vignettes, as well as additional atmosphere entertainment, throughout Downtown Disney.

Construction on the district begins immediately and it’s scheduled to be completed in 2013.

ONE MAN'S DREAM REOPENS!

11.10.10 - Planning a visit to Walt Disney World? Make sure to check out this popular Disney's Hollywood Studios attraction, presented by your friends at D23.

One Man's Dream features sections of the original model for it's a small world (shown here) as well as the actual Audio-Animatronics® Abraham Lincoln figure that debuted at the New York World's Fair in 1964.

The attraction, which salutes the life and legacy of Walt Disney, has a new look and an array of amazing new exhibits! Two highlights are in the WED Imagineering Workshop area, which features sections of the original model for it's a small world as well as the actual Audio-Animatronics® Abraham Lincoln figure that debuted at the New York World's Fair in 1964.

There's also an entire case dedicated to classic EPCOT that includes a Figment Audio-Animiatronics® figure, the robot butler from Horizons and two plush versions of the veggie fruit-fruits featured in the Kitchen Kabaret. You can also see Walt's travel trunk, which he used during his voyages in the 1920s and '30s.

And of course, there's D23's window, which features items from the ultimate Disney fan's room. A new area, "The Legacy Continues," which celebrates Disney landmarks from the 1970s through today, will open in December.

The film tribute One Man's Dream, hosted by Julie Andrews, remains the heartwarming finale to this inspiring attraction.

Halloween Decor Dazzles at Disneyland Resort!

October is one of my favorite times of the year here at the Disneyland Resort, as our talented ghouls and goblins – otherwise known as our Visual Presentation teams and Resort Enhancement teams – go above and beyond in creating immersive experiences in some of our key store locations.

On my way through the Resort, I had a minute to catch up with Rebecca Arnspiger, Manager of Visual Presentation, who shared with me a little insight on what it takes to transform our stores and store windows.

Each year, we partner with our Resort Enhancement teams who seamlessly take overdressing the Resort to a whole new level. It’s fun for us to get creative and at the same time create spaces that will get people excited and into the spirit of the season. Between the two groups we’re able to continue telling the story of Halloween from our streets to our stores. I hope that the Guests visiting the Resort take a minute to look at the overdressed window displays and the stores.

‘Tangled’ Stars and Directors Meet Rapunzel and Flynn Rider at the Disneyland Resort

This past weekend, the people who brought Rapunzel and Flynn Rider to life in the Disney film, “Tangled,” had a chance to meet the characters in Fantasyland at Disneyland park. Mandy Moore, voice of Rapunzel, and Zachary Levi, voice of Flynn Rider, were at Disneyland park doing interviews to celebrate the film’s upcoming release this Thanksgiving. During their visit, they headed over to Fantasyland to see Rapunzel and Flynn Rider for the first time in the Park. While they were here, we caught up with them to ask a few questions about their exciting new movie.

New Species at Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Emperor Tamarin and Addax

Guests visiting us now have the opportunity to see two species of animals that are new to Disney’s Animal Kingdom – the emperor tamarin in Rafiki’s Planet Watch and the addax on the Kilimanjaro Safaris. They join the more than 1,500 animals representing over 300 species that make their home at our theme park.

A pair of emperor tamarins (gotta love the mustache!), a male and a female, have joined the cotton-top tamarins and the golden lion tamarins on the trail to Conservation Station in Rafiki’s Planet Watch. There are only 34 emperor tamarins in U.S. zoological parks, and the pair came to Disney’s Animal Kingdom as a recommendation from the Population Management Plan program coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which means that a baby emperor tamarin would be a welcome event! Emperor tamarins naturally range in Brazil, Peru and Bolivia.

Five male addax, a kind of African antelope, recently made their debut on the Kilimanjaro Safaris. Addax are best known for their long, corkscrew horns. Once widespread across North Africa, the addax population has been severely reduced due to over-hunting. They also are impacted by long periods of drought. Addax are critically endangered with estimates indicating that there are fewer than 300 in the wild.

I never cease to be amazed at the wonderful diversity of wildlife! It’s a privilege to be able to provide our Guests with the opportunity to see animals of all shapes and sizes and to help them understand what all of us can do to protect wildlife and nature.

Disney Trading – Trick or Trade

I’ve mentioned before how much I like Halloween. Okay, I’ll admit – it’s the candy (who’s with me?). It’s my second favorite holiday, after my birthday, which has presents (I’m seeing a theme here). With that spirit of giving in mind, I dug into the Disney Pin Vault to take a look back at some of my favorite Halloween pins.

Over the years, we’ve released a variety of limited edition pins celebrating this holiday. One of my favorites is the Chip and Dale pin that was released on October 31, 2003. It features the mischievous chipmunks dressed as astronauts (I love the 1950s rocket in the background). This pin was part of a “Trick or Treat” collection where different pins were released at different locations at Walt Disney World. I also like the Disney Cruise Line pin from 2004. Donald’s nephews remind me of the classic cartoon short, “Trick or Treat” from 1952. As a child, I recall watching that short on a slide projector in my basement (who uses those things anymore?).

Each year, we create pins for the special Halloween events at Disney Theme Parks. I chose the Hades pin from Mickey’s Halloween Treat in 2007 (now known as Mickey’s Halloween Party) as a favorite. Why? Because Hades rules! New this year to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom in Florida is a limited edition pin (above right) that will only be released on October 31 (a popular night from what I have heard). This pin was created based on guest feedback from previous years. We thought this retail pin was a great way to offer something unique for those attending the Halloween night party. Cool part – it glows in the dark (all together, “Oooo!”).

Julie Young, our long-time developer for open edition pins, helped me with the final selections. I chose the candy corn with mouse ears. I love simple designs, and this one screams (ha) Halloween. Julie chose a new open edition pin featuring Tinker Bell. She really liked her festive dress (something not often seen on Ms. Bell). Julie also raved about a new lanyard that features sublimated printing. The image used on this lanyard was from a Halloween style guide that was created for usage at Disney Parks around the world (something of a first for us). A style guide gives reference material, character designs, backgrounds and more that are used to achieve a consistent look in all the merchandise created. If you aren’t the dressing-up type or you are looking for a simple costume, this lanyard should work for you.

The only other pin not represented is a chocolate one that I could devour. Wouldn’t that be yummy? Sadly, we haven’t created a pin like that yet (but feel free to send any chocolate my way). Disney Fantasy Sets Sail in April 2012 – 2012 Itineraries Open for Booking

With all the excitement about the arrival of our new Disney Dream cruise ship in January, we don’t want to overlook another huge milestone for Disney Cruise Line…the arrival of the brand-new Disney Fantasy ship in 2012!

The Disney Fantasy will sail her maiden voyage on April 7, 2012, bringing even more innovation, unique guest experiences and personalized service to guests. A sister ship to the Disney Dream, the Disney Fantasy will feature an AquaDuck water coaster, magical children’s areas, world-class entertainment, delightful dining, retreats for adults and immersive experiences for guests of all ages with beloved Disney stories and characters.

The Disney Fantasy will sail out of Port Canaveral, Fla., on the popular seven-night Caribbean itineraries – alternating eastern and western – including a stop at Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

The Disney Dream will continue to sail three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, while the Disney Wonder will remain on the west coast, sailing Mexican Riviera itineraries from the Port of Los Angeles. To start the 2012 season, the Disney Magic will sail alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries.

Guests will be able to book sailings, including the Disney Fantasy, for the initial part of the 2012 season beginning Oct. 20, 2010. Disney Cruise Line Gold and Platinum Castaway Club members can begin booking 2012 itineraries on Oct. 19, 2010.

Reservations Open for Wild Africa Trek Adventures at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

How’s that for a view? Such wildlife thrills are part of the upcoming Wild Africa Trek experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and we’ve just opened reservations. It’s the same adventure we told you about in July but now we can share more details.

Wild Africa Trek will be a three-hour, expert-led adventure offering up-close-and-personal experiences with wildlife species that make their home in Pangani Forest as well as other areas of the park’s Harambe Wildlife Reserve. As part of the adventure, you’ll clip onto a lifeline and step to the edge of a cliff to get amazingly close to the hippos and crocs. Here are a few highlights for curious explorers:

Trekking with experienced guides through areas of Harambe Wildlife Reserve that aren’t explored during regular Disney’s Animal Kingdom experiences.
Navigating through fern and vine forests on a bushwalk.
Clipping into a harness attached to a safety line, crossing a rope bridge over the Safi River and cliff-hanging at the edge of gullies that are home to hippos and crocodiles.
Experiencing the thrill of “over-landing” in customized open-air vehicles following the edge of a wide-open savanna.
Unwinding from an unforgettable adventure at a private safari camp for wildlife viewing. At this station elevated above the savanna, guests will savor sample tastes of Africa.

Harambe Wildlife Reserve will be offered several times daily at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Groups will be kept small, consisting of no more than 12 trekkers per safari.

Reservations for Wild Africa Trek can be arranged by calling 407-WDW-TOUR (939-8687). Pricing for this unique adventure will vary seasonally. Guests who reserve a booking from Jan. 16-Feb. 26, 2011, may take advantage of an introductory offer starting at $129. Park admission is required for participants.

New Disneyland Resort Ambassador Team Selected

Forty-five years ago, Walt Disney selected the first Disneyland Ambassador, Julie Reihm, and that tradition has continued ever since. This year, we are proud to announce that Jolie Hales and René Torrico have been selected as the 2011-2012 Ambassador team. The team will spend its two-year term serving as emissaries of goodwill and being the public representatives of our 20,000 cast members.

The Ambassadors also have the joy of taking the magic of Disneyland and sharing it outside the “berm” (the walls of the park) – whether by visiting children at local hospitals with Mickey Mouse or supporting events such as charity fundraisers. We are thrilled to have these two talented individuals join the ranks of Disney Ambassadors around the world.

I wish I could have attended the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971 (some of you reading this probably did – lucky!). One of my all time favorite Disney films from that time period is called “The Magic of Walt Disney World.” It was released in 1972, but I recall seeing it on the Disney Channel in the 1980s. What a classic slice of Disney – the lush sounds of Buddy Baker; the images of polyester and people eating food; groovy music in Tomorrowland and just pure 1970s Disney fun. A different time and a different place. It is in that same vein that I’m pleased to announce “The Florida Project: a Disney Trading and Collecting Experience” coming to World ShowPlace at Epcot on September 9-11, 2011. The image above is a rough concept poster designed by Chris Chapman from Disney Design Group. He is the lead designer for this event and spoke about the origin of this event.

“With the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World in 2011, we wanted to focus on the feeling of nostalgia that people have when thinking about those early years,” said Chris. “The story for this event involves an alternate Preview Center that we uncovered. It was never used because the official Preview Center opened on Buena Vista Drive. The experience will be as if you stepped back in time as we will pay tribute to as much as possible from that era.”

When we had our initial idea session, I brought several of my vintage Disney items to share (it’s one of the things I collect – Disney merchandise from 1970 to 1984). We looked at vintage postcards, at images in souvenir books and even at my Polynesian Village glass vase (behold those 1970s colors). We all agreed that we wanted the merchandise created for this event to have a similar vibe.

“We plan to create a retro look with the character designs” explained Alex Maher, senior character artist with Disney Design Group. “The character designs in the early 1970s were unique. We want to incorporate a similar look with the merchandise we are designing.”

As mentioned, this event will be a Disney Trading and Collecting Experience. This means you will find a variety of items from pins to Vinylmation to potentially some additional categories. And there will be trading (of course). I consider this event an evolution of our Disney Merchandise Events. We still have plenty of details to finalize, and feedback to consider from our previous events. I will share additional information in the coming months on the Disney Parks Blog, so stay tuned.

I leave you with one final question: Did you visit Walt Disney World in the 1970s? What was it like (as sadly my time machine is still not functioning)? I’d love to hear your stories.

Florida Runners Toast Dominance at Inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

Among Sold-Out Field of More Than 11,000 Runners

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Oct. 2, 2010) – Anton Van Zyl from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Matthew Dobson from Jay, Fla., were the first two finishers Saturday night in the inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. In the women’s division Melissa Wisner from Washington, D.C., crossed the finish line first, with a 1:32:22 time.

Van Zyl and Dobson provided plenty of drama before Van Zyl pulled away. Van Zyl ran a 1:14:51, while Dobson finished close behind with a 1:15:04. Adam Siepiola from Garden City, N.Y., came in third (1:15:12).

“It was real close down the stretch,” Van Zyl said. “We were neck and neck. I put on a hard charge about a half mile out. The crowd was fantastic and it was a great finish.”

Wisner won easily. She crossed the line nearly three minutes ahead of Sheila Sullivan of Daytona Beach, Fla., who posted a time of 1:35:16. Caterina Lancia of Miami, Fla., was third (1:36:58).

“I’ve never actually run a night race before, it’s very much a different experience,” said Wisner. “All the lights made it very exciting.”

The half marathon, the last of four runDisney events this year, capped a sold-out weekend full of events that featured more than 14,000 runners, including more than 11,000 that ran the 13.1-mile race through multiple Disney theme parks. The half marathon was the first runDisney half marathon held at night and the first to involve a relay option. The runners celebrated their accomplishment with an exclusive after-hours party at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

“I always like coming to Disney,” Van Zyl said. “I love food, I love wine. That’s why I’m here.” The race began at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and weaved through Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Hollywood Studios before finishing at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

All finishers received an inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon medal and had the opportunity to experience the Health and Fitness expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The expo included seminars on training techniques from Jeff Galloway and the latest running equipment.

Registration for the 2011 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon starts in February. The half marathon weekend will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

Party, Party, Party at New Disney Wine & Dine Half-Marathon Weekend

Even though the inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon this weekend is completely sold out, there are plenty of ways you can still be a part of the fun.

The 11,000 registered runners will run 13.1 miles through various theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort on Saturday night at 10 p.m., then celebrate the achievement at the Finish Line Party at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival starting at 10:30 p.m. You can get into the party too – without running 13.1 miles – by buying a Finish Line Party ticket for $35 (theme park attractions and pavilions will be closed). Get your rest, though, because the party goes til 3 a.m. and will be packed with culinary delights, fine wines, Disney character meet & greets and live musical performances.

You can also check out the event’s Health & Fitness Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Friday and Saturday where you can submerge yourself in all things running – everything from new training equipment to running products and apparel to seminars on running by leading industry experts.

First Look: New Dance Parties at Mickey’s Halloween Party

Here is a first look at the artwork that has inspired new dance parties at Mickey’s Halloween Party, the special nighttime event on Halloween night and Tuesdays and Fridays in October.

Family dance parties at Mickey’s Halloween Party will get guests of all ages mixing, mingling and dancing in their Halloween costumes. Here are a few more details:

Club Skellington at the French Market will be headlined by Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, at the thrilling and chilling dance party that captures the ghoulish delights of Halloweentown.
Buzz Lightyear’s Intergalactic Space Jam at Tomorrowland Terrace will feature an out-of-this-world dance party with Buzz Lightyear, Buzz Girl dancers, Green Army Men and Space Diva DJ.

Tickets for Mickey’s Halloween Party are now available and can be purchased at Disneyland.com/Halloween. Here’s an insider’s tip: if you purchase tickets in advance, you’ll get a great discount on select nights. There’s also a discount for annual passholders on select nights.

Disney Launches Magic of Healthy Living

Exciting news to share today from The Walt Disney Company. We’ve just launched a new initiative to help parents raise healthy, happy children called Disney Magic of Healthy Living. It’s a program encouraging smart eating and exercise through a year-long series of inspiring public service announcements featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and some Disney Channel stars, including Nick Jonas and Brenda Song. Here’s a first look:

One of the big highlights of the program will take place right here at the Walt Disney World Resort. Children will be able to compete in a national essay contest to write about their ideas for living a healthy life at home, at school or in their communities. The contest will be open to kids ages 8 to 14 on October 21, 2010, and entries can be submitted through December 1, 2010. Fifty winners will be invited to Disney Magic of Healthy Living – The Weekend event at the Walt Disney World Resort. For more information about the contest, visit Disney.com/healthyfun.

Disney Magic of Healthy Living is also online. We’ve launched two new dedicated websites:

Disney Guests Become Stars of TV Ads, Castle Show As Walt Disney World and Disneyland ‘Let the Memories Begin’

As you just learned during our live coverage out of New York City, Disney Parks has officially launched “Let the Memories Begin” – our special celebration of family vacations and magical memories. And yes, you’re going to be the star. For the first time, your home videos and snapshots will be featured in Disney television ads and other print and online communications.

To kick things off, we’ve launched DisneyParks.com/Memories. It’s a new destination where you can upload your Disney vacation memories captured in photos and videos and share with the world. And getting started is easy:

Choose to share your memory on DisneyParks.com/Memories; Facebook.com/WaltDisneyWorld; Facebook.com/Disneyland; Youtube.com/DisneyMemories; or Myspace.com/DisneyParks.
Describe your memory. Memories can upload as photos, videos or text-only.
Then all it takes is hitting the “submit” box and, once reviewed, a lifetime Disney memory is stored and shared.

Simple, right? So, what should you submit? Your favorite memories – whether it was a first meeting with a Disney princess, a laugh-filled Splash Mountain ride or a magical moment around a holiday fireplace when mom and dad surprised everyone with a “We’re Going to Disney!” announcement – We’re looking for videos and photos that capture your never-to-be-forgotten experiences. Take a look:

And there’s more – beginning in January of 2011, you’ll also become the star of a nightly spectacular at Disney Parks. Photos of magical memories made in the park during the day will be projected that night on Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World and “it’s a small world” at Disneyland Resort. Pretty cool, huh?

In both locations, Disney PhotoPass photographers will provide images of guests shot during the day to be shared on the icons. While we’re still working on the show details, producers estimate as many as 500 photos will be shown in each location every day.

A Train’s Life: the Disneyland Railroad

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to photograph the steam trains of the Disneyland Railroad. This post includes photos from the morning into the late afternoon. Be sure to look for my next post to see the night photos. This early morning photo was taken at the roundhouse while the engine was warming up before starting its day in the park.

For this next photo, the engineer stopped the train next to the Mickey Mouse Water tower in Toontown Depot and released some steam, which usually makes for a fun picture.

I love the “toon-looking” luggage at the Toontown Depot, but thought a photo needed a little something more. I used a slow shutter speed to make it look like the train is speeding through the station. A train leaving without luggage could only happen in Mickey’s Toontown!

Seeing the afternoon sun coming though the trees in Critter Country is really a great sight, and I wanted to incorporate a train in that setting. I took this photo from the Hungry Bear Restaurant.
