Changing a Coastline
Some rough outlines of coastline usually exist, but you can help make them much better.
When there is land missing from the coastline, do the following:
- Create a polygon (see above). Choose "Land Mass" from the drop-down menu.
- Trace along the land in the imagery. No attribute data is needed.
When there is water missing, do the following:
- Create a polygon. Choose "Water" from the drop-down menu.
- Trace along the water in the imagery.
- No attribute data is needed.
Tip: You may need to toggle between the Map and Satellite views to get a better perspective (see below).

Adding an Island
When you draw an island, it appears above any water feature. To add an island:
- Create a polygon (see above). Choose Island from the drop-down menu.
- Trace along the island in the imagery.
- Add any appropriate attribute data.
Adding a River
Rivers are drawn differently than a bay or a lake, which would use only the polygon feature. Here's how:
- Create a line. Choose River from the drop-down menu.
- Draw the line along the center of the river in the imagery.
- Add any appropriate attribute data.
- If the river is wider than a thin line, you can "fill in" where the water is by:
- Create a polygon. Choose Water from the drop-down menu.
- Draw sections of the river drawing polygons around the coastlines in the imagery.
- Add any appropriate attribute data.
Left: Satellite view will show you the lines drawn; Right: Map view will show you the polygons drawn.
