Best Practices

Follow these guidelines to help ensure that you create quality content in Google Map Maker:
  • Do not blindly copy content from other sites.
  • Draw cities you are familiar with.
  • Turn on the Hybrid view when editing. This will show both the Imagery and any map features already drawn on top of it.
  • Draw every feature at the best zoom possible. This ensures you have accurately captured the particular feature.
  • Before drawing any feature, please ensure that the feature does not already exist.
  • Draw city borders (using polygon tool and "City/Town/Village" attribute) before you draw features like roads in a city.
  • To add a shopping mall which has many businesses in it, create the mall as a polygon and the other businesses in the mall as points of interest (POIs). This approach is also appropriate for universities, large office buildings, IT parks which host different companies, etc.
  • Write out the full word when drawing roads. Example: "Avenue" instead of "Ave".
  • Do not use parenthesis to include two or more names for a feature. Instead, please add a second name using this process:
    1. Create a feature, like a road.
    2. Click Add/Edit details in bottom left-hand corner of the info window.
    3. Fill out the name information in the "Overview" tab of the detailed info window.
    4. Click Add Name to add additional names.
  • Do not mistake canals, rivers, railways, compound walls or roads for each other.
  • Check the features in My Items regularly this is where you will find feedback from moderators if any.
  • It's easiest to draw major landmarks, like airports, universities, highways, etc. to allow you and other users to better orient themselves when looking at the imagery of your town of interest.
  • When creating large regions using the Polygon tool, avoid creating more than 250 points for each feature. If it is impossible to create the accurate shape within 250 points, publish the feature with less points, then edit the feature to add more nodes or points. This prevents the feature from showing up as a square, publishes the feature faster with limited time loss and prevents timed out problems.
