St. Luke Lutheran Church Street Vacation Update:
February 10, 2012
Dear Neighbors:
Last spring, we updated you on our plans to improve the facilities at St. Luke Lutheran Church and vacate the unimproved streets dividing our property. As you might recall, we were about to go before the Portland Planning and Sustainability Commission for a hearing on our application for vacation of those parts of SW 46th Avenue and SW Vermont Street that divide the church property. The Commission recommended that the Portland City Council approve the application, with conditions that include substantial improvements of sidewalks around the church property, street improvements on SW Vermont Street and pedestrian access through the church property, among others.
We write today to provide another update as we continue through the street vacation process. The next step is a hearing before the Portland City Council. The hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. on February 22, 2012, at Portland City Hall, City Hall, 1221 SW Fourth Avenue, in downtown Portland. Members of the St. Luke’s Property Development Steering Team will attend to explain our plans to the Council and seek its support. The hearing is open to the public.
In the meantime, we will continue our preparation of a master plan for the church property in consultation with the team of Steve Mileham of LRS Architects and Bill Wilson of William Wilson Architects. The master plan is intended to address both the worship needs of our congregation and our efforts to serve people in our community. We remain committed to the development of plans that are harmonious with the neighborhood and are environmentally responsible. Our goal is to complete and adopt a master plan this spring.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions, suggestions or concerns as we move forward.
