Representatives from Eastside Fire and Water District 90 met with Blake Brewser, reprentatives from the Maple Hills Board, and Maple Hills residents last night to review findings from Blake Brewster's house fire last month. In attendance from the Fire Department was the Chairman of the Eastside Fire District 10, the Battalion Fire Chief, the local Chief and representatives from our local volunteer Fire Department, located next to the park. From the Water District, we had both a planner as well as the councilman.
According to the Fire Department and Water District, Maple Hills is zoned as a rural district. Because it is zoned rural, the expectation is that the first arriving fire truck should be arrive no less than 16 minutes from the first emergency call. In their records, the first emergency call was placed at 11:57 pm, the unit was dispatched at 11:58pm and the truck was enroute 33 seconds thereafter ariving at the scene 8 minutes and 23 seconds after that. Upon arriving, they immediately went to the closest fire hydrant to connect the truck to the hydrant then fight the fire.
An official copy of the findings around fire hydrant water flow and fire hydrant availability in the neighborhood is here. will be added to this post once they become available online. The findings detail that the Fire Department had no problem getting water from the fire hydrant (there is a process they have to go through to reduce the impact of water hammer on the truck and the main that would have made this appear to be the case). They also feel that there is a "high degree" of protection for homes as their first responder trucks have 500+ gallons of water onboard and additional trucks, called "tankers", are also called to respond to all Maple Hills fires as our area is defined as an area with and without fire hydrants. According to Fire Department records, both tankers and first responder trucks were called that night although the tankers were sent back as the hydrant provided the Fire Department what they needed.
One important note: the reason why our local volunteer fire department was unable to respond was due to a lack of volunteer firefighers. Their numbers have dwindled from 18 volunteers in 2005 to just 6 today. As they needed 3 people to man the truck, there were insufficient volunteers available (one was at work). This left one responder standing outside their door waiting for more volutneers. Your local volunteer fire department needs your help in order to respond to your fires and medical emergencies! To learn more about being a fire department volunteer, please call (425) 313-3200 or check out www.eastsidevolunteer.org.
The Maple Hills Board is reviewing the information provided to them last night and will discuss this further at their next board meeting at 730PM, September 9th, 2009 at Evergreen Community Church. You are very welcome to attend!
If you have additional quesitons on the findings, Jeff Griffin, the Deputy Chief of Eastside Fire & Rescue, would like to hear from you. You can reach him at (425) 313-3203 or by email at jgriffin@esf-r.org. |

Six years ago, Sheila Beuter, Amy Rau, Lynn Evans, and Stacy Morford didn't want to leave the neighborhood to celebrate Independance Day. The festivals in area were beautiful but crowded and they wanted to find something that they could enjoy within Maple HIlls. They asked their children to decorate their bikes and ride around the neighborhood. Their children told their friends and their friends told their friends. By the end of the day, there were over 30 kids in a parade that circled the neighborhood.
Flash forward to today, and that grass roots tradition has grown into a full day event. In just a few short years, what started as an idea to keep children entertained in the middle of summer has become a collection of events for the entire community!
The day started with a 5K Fun Run at 9am in the morning. This was a pilot event started between Carl "Carlito Von Vogner" Wager, Sandy Wagner, and Rion Rau to measure potential community interest. Surprisingly, there were over 25 entrants! The route started from the Maple Hills Pool parking lot and ran up 204th, around 203rd then down the hill and around the "big loop" to finish up 204th and around the ball field. Marshalling the event was Greg "Ministry of Finance" Evans and his son Tanner. Thanks to all that participated in the fun run. If you would like your time from the event, please contact maplehills@yahoogroups.com.
Not to be outdone with a fun run, there was record turnout for the 4th of July Parade. This year two firetrucks from Eastside Fire lead the
procession as well as picked up the rear. Rob "El Presidente" Ashby, President of Maple Hills, valiantly lead the fire trucks and the parade route that ran through the lower loop of Maple Hills this year (each year, the parade alternates between upper loop and lower loop so that smaller children walking can enjoy the parade without needing assistance). The 1.8 mile loop included a pass by Blake's home which succumed to fire last month. A donation basket was available for all to donate to Blake's relief.
The parade itself was a diverse mix of floats (including one with a 20 foot Giraffe), classic cars, TWO Eastside Fire trucks, a "Hills Angels" motorcycle unit, a pickup with a toe truck flatbed to carry little ones that needed help finishing the race (thanks Jon Ament) and over 200 parents and children from Maple Hills and surrounding neighborhoods. The entire route was complete in under 30 minutes leaving everyone very hungry for what was about to come.
Thanks to our neighbors at Evergreen Church, a free hot dog feed was provided including Fisher Meats hot dogs (provided by Fisher meats) as well as chips and bottled water. Also included was a signup tent for the Maple Hills Park day camp held later this month (for registration forms, stop by the Pool) as well as a fishing game tent held in a replica African safari village tent held in ravine behind the covered shelter. Everyone left with full bellies and an opportunity to catch up again with their neighbors.
Thanks to all that attended! We look to see you again next year!
