PROFESSOR GUERRA OF WING TSUN KUNG FU When Leung Ting taught me chi sau, he did it in a simple easy way. Leung ting was misunderstood by many of his students. I knew what he meant in his teachings of chi-sau, therefore I took off with it and developed it to where it suited me and now my students. I was not bound to the sections he created. Therefore, I have no strategy. My chi sau is unorthodox, therefore, unpredictable. And, thus I teach this way to my students. When they reach a skillful level they will know it, not trapped in chi-sau, nor in kata, but becoming free from it all, the skills become alive from the training in the drills of chi-sau or the techniques of kata. Nothingness has it's purpose. "Nothing" must not be taken for granted. Master Tan taught me to "feel" the attack before it happens, to sense the unspoken words of combat vocabulary. Koyasu Sensei taught me Karate is Karate the empty hand -- the empty ego, the one point of focus, and most of all, Grandmaster Alvarado taught me, "Never give up in the HEAT of battle!". Even when defeat is imminent, fight like hell and fight to win. GRANDMASTER LEUNG TING taught me the dynamics of close-quarter combat, trapping the hands and borrowing the power GUERRA WING CHUN KUNG FU. We cannot solely depend on memory. Our system is not bound by classical movements. It is not a pre-arranged style in which two practitioners spar in a repetitive manner. Although our martial art has classical forms, we can only describe them as the main divisions of mathematics found in the science of martial arts. When Joe Alvarado taught me Soryu Karate, classes were hardcore, grueling, ruthless, and brutal, our bodies were transformed into human steel, our techniques were not based on fancy words or intellectualism, or on theory. If it worked, we used it, and if it didn't, we discarded it. Our training was on the dojo floor with sweat, blood and tears. we trained like war machines not afraid of any opponent . This was and is to this day the philosophy of Soryu Karate, and of the Wing Chun and Escrima I teach to my students. It is like chess. Every piece of our technique corresponds to a movement of our way within, found in each art. This is what all the martial arts are to achieve in the development of our student: to be without form, to achieve a level of non-conformity. When you become robotic, you are predictable and are easier to defeat, regardless of 'hard' or 'soft' style. "There is no superior martial art, only the superior martial artist." MASTER GUERRA CURRENTLY IS TEACHING WING TSUN KUNG FU, WITH DAY TIME CLASSES STARTING SOON-AND EVENING CLASSES ALL READY IN PROGRESS, ALL STUDENTS ARE LEARNING THE TECHNIQUES OF WING TSUN FOR SELF-DEFENSE AND FOR UP COMING TOURNAMENTS. The same for Soryu karate and my Mano de Guerra escrima system: not trapped in technique, my freedom and effectiveness is in its formlessness. The masses cannot understand 'formlessness'. They understand "sets" of information. To reside in formlessness they must first be bound to the art, when they learn to unbound, they will begin to see, feel, and understand the formless 'form'. It makes no matter if it is tae kwon do, hard Japanese karate, or wing chun (no matter how you spell it) you must see yourself as a WARRIOR, one who survives, one that can use the mindless mind, reflecting the intent or non-intent of an enemy's aggression back to the aggressor, not forgetting that our martial arts skill is a reflexive, non hinking action. To THINK is too slow! To act is fast, and to BE is to move mind and body as one action.
