Hilary Rawles was our lead musician from our earliest days until her death in 2010. Coming from a Morris family and with a wealth of knowledge and experience as a traditional musician Hilary was an enormous asset to our side as well as a good friend. Patiently playing and replaying the same tunes again and again while our dancers learned how to dance the Morris she never complained and rarely missed a practice session. Her dedication to the side was quite extraordinary and she'd often go to great lengths to ensure that she was available to play for performances. My personal experience with Hilary was as a fellow musician. Starting from a point of little knowledge and little musical experience Hilary helped me to understand what the role required and she patiently supported me as I learned to play Concertina, never complaining when I missed notes or even played the wrong tune! While the dancers were preparing we had lots of time to chat about everything and nothing and I came to know her as a person of great humour, intelligence and compassion. While her loss has left a great hole in our side I can honestly say that her influence on both the side and me personally continues. We are all better for having known her.
