ALIBU MOUNTAIN ARCHERY CLUB
Established 1938 home
Malibu Mountain Archery Club was the oldest, continuously operated Field Archery Club in the United States. In California, Pasadena Roving Archers was established in 1935, but was not a continuously operated field range. The Club was a variety of things and reflected the changes of our communities and people during the 69 years of operation. The Club was a place to meet and have fun. Many National Champions throughout the years called the Club home. The Club was a charitable organization, helping many people and many groups. During World War ll soldiers found a friendly place to stay away from home. The Club was a teaching facility and a place to try your archery skills when the Olympics were held in California. In 1943 the State of California opened the Santa Monica Mountains to licensed hunters. The range was within a legal hunting area, but the Club decided to prohibit hunting on the range. While hunting was not allowed on the range, hunters enjoyed competing with each other for bulls-eyes on paper targets. For some archers the Club gave them the hunting experience without hunting animals. During the early years most of the archers who practiced at the range also brought their families. Archery was taught in many schools and there were many more female archers at the club in the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's. Archery was a popular sport and everyone was familiar with Robin Hood. Some disliked the archery club because archery represented hunting to them. The irony today is that the loss of the archery range may signal more harm to the animal population. The range was a refuge and a sanctuary for animals and provided water for wildlife. The planned building in the area may cut off water and will reduce available food, thus starving the deer, cats, rabbits, foxes and all other wildlife. Calling housing developments green or environmentally friendly can't hide the destruction already visible from aerial photos. |
