Assignment 6- Comparing Making Your Premed Rounds to the competition

Studentdoc.com

Studentdoc.com is the best website when it comes to planning an extensive education path.  It has information about premed requirements, MCAT test preparation, connections to personal statement editing service, choosing a medical school, access to student loans, etc.  It also has an active premed forum.

What Making Your Premed Rounds has that studentdoc.com does not is a deeper, more updated future scope.  You will find more focus on greater trends in medicine like stem cell research, genetic-specific medicine, and healthcare reform that you can find here.  You will also find more updated information on these topics via the “Article of the Week” section.

The website also has advertisements on the top of the page, to the left of the first paragraph.  This could turn off web surfers who have come to associate advertisements as an indication of spamming.

Although this website has more detailed education path advice, the extent of advice that Making Your Premed Rounds provides is sufficient to get started.  The pages of Making Your Premed Rounds have less text distracters, making it easier to navigate for people not sure what to look for on a premed website.

Bestpremed.com

The language is very personable, direct, and easy navigation.  From the homepage it directs current premeds, high school students, and non-traditional premeds to the best pages for their interests.  Paragraphs are kept short and advertisements have minimal interaction with the content of the pages.

This website, however has not been updated since 2006.  The once great question and answer service run by the web creator has not been updated since 1999.  There is also no discussion on greater trends in medicine to keep people coming back, and medical specialty descriptions are not provided.

Aamc.org/students

The Association of American Medical Colleges is the authority on the medical school application process.  Every premedical website shapes its information according to AAMC guidelines.  All of the information is there, but the website is not premed friendly with regards to navigation.

The AAMC homepage has a lot of distracter links to resources for medical schools, but the link for premeds is on the far right corner apart from these links.  If you find and follow this link, it takes you to another page with a good source of resources from considering medicine to choosing residency.

But this website does not have detailed explanations for what is important on a medical school application, spare fulfilling premed requirements.  Making Your Premed Rounds expands on the short advice offered through this website, and explains the alternative paths to medical school that can be taken.
