Welcome to the homepage of the M.A. in Development Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai!

Director's Message:

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a centrally funded university recognized as an
institution of academic excellence developing human resources to work towards a people-centered, ecologically sustainable, prosperous and just society. The TISS introduced a two
year full time master’s programme in Development Studies in June 2006, and the second
batch will graduate in May 2008.

At TISS, the multidisciplinary Development Studies programme engages with a multitude of
approaches and contemporary theories in the social sciences that deal with development
perspectives, policy, and practice. The programme requires the students to complete four
Foundation Courses structured to encourage students to reflect on their personal and
professional orientations to wider society and to equip them with the capacity to engage with
and analyze a range of social, political, cultural and economic issues using theoretical and
empirical inputs from the social sciences.

The sphere of developmental professionals has been a vastly expanding and diversifying
sphere. These professionals are being increasingly called upon to undertake policy related
analyses and work on a wide range of issues that affect the livelihoods of people. They have
to continuously engage with policy makers, economic planners and various actors in
international negotiations, such as those related to trade. We are sure that the course work
in TISS is capable of equipping students to participate in these new opportunities.

In the 2007-09 Development Studies batch, TISS admitted 30 students with excellent
academic and extra-curricular credentials from varying disciplinary backgrounds. These students graduate with social awareness, strong theoretical and analytical skills to
make meaningful contributions as employees of local, national, and international
organisations and businesses involved in development, as researchers and analysts, and
pursue academic careers. We are proud to present them for engagement in your
organization.
