Our Superintendent Minister, Rev. Clifford Newman has now been with us since 2010 and his latest message appears below.
In Maldon there was a custom at the end of January to
celebrate Plough Sunday. It is part of
an old pagan tradition which was still evident as Morris Dancers used to haul a
plough up the High Street performing their traditional dances. They then went into the Anglican Church where
the Vicar blessed the plough and the local farms that they may produce good
crops. Maldon, although located on a river estuary, was traditionally an
industrial market town and even today grain is milled and shipped out. Winter is not an idle time for farmers as
they prepare the ground and mend fences and machinery in readiness for the
coming season.
At the end of February Lent begins with Ash Wednesday
falling on 22nd
February. This is a time to prepare for
Easter with it being a traditional time for fasting and prayer. There will be Lent Studies at Week Street
commencing on 29th February 7.30 to 9pm and here at Union Street there will be four Tuesday
lunchtime meditations commencing on Tuesday 13th March followed with a light Lent lunch.
