The village shop was a branch of Walton’s Departmental Store of Mere, opening at Bradley in 1889. They sold most things – groceries, clothes, shoes, drapery, even furniture. Something not in stock at Bradley would be ordered from Mere and sent the next day. During the 1920s Walton’s Bakery was kept very busy, especially at Easter and Christmas. On the Thursday before Good Friday a team of bakers and helpers would spend all night making 1,000 hot cross buns.

SOME SHOP PRODUCT INFO

Times Past

Monday was market day, and had been since 1267. The original site was near the priory, but it later moved to Church Street The stalls covered over 100 yards and offered a wide variety of goods. Local produce such as butter, eggs, cheese and honey were available. Occasionally there was fruit and sweets, or travellers with cheap trinkets. Coal from Radstock was sold at threepence ha’penny ( 1.5 pence) a bag. There was always ale available. People walked four or five miles to visit the market, or made use of a public carrier if they could afford it. Bradley was at the intersection of two important coaching routes – London to Barnstaple and Bath to Poole. In 1780 three coaching inns in the village. Between 1750 and 1800 three turnpike roads ran through Bradley, to Frome, Wincanton and Bruton.

Spencer's Eggs, Zeals (special mention!) - Fridays

Our free range eggs come from the Spencers’ family-run farm, only a few miles away at Zeals. They are laid on a mixed farm where they share the pasture with a dairy herd. The wheat for their diet is grown and milled on the farm. They are free to to roam from dawn to dusk and their indoor space is an ‘aviary’ system – like a large climbing frame, for happy birds! In 2010, Spencers’ Free Range Eggs won the prize for best tasting eggs at a national award ceremony run by Country Life Magazine.

Yumbles Crumbles, Frome

Wilton Wholefoods, Wilton
