Thanks for signing up to plant trees with us this Weekend!
Here are the details you need to prepare for this event. Let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday! What: We will be planting over 700 saplings along a creek on a farm in Louisa County. The creek drains into the South Anna Riverand is part of the York River watershed. The vegetated buffer we will put in place is what is know as a "best management practice" and will help reduce runoff and erosion from going into the creek, and further downstream. When: Saturday, November 21, 2009 9 AM – 1:30 PM
Where: The physical address for a nearby farm house is: 12894 Louisa Road Louisa, VA 23093 But, we will be meeting and working on the farm fields located to the west of this address. And we will be sure to have the actual farm driveway well-marked on the day of the event, so everyone will know which driveway to turn in to. Directions: From Interstate 64 East to exit # 136 (Zion Crossroads) and turn onto U.S. Route 15 North towards Gordonsville & Orange. U.S. Route 15 North will go past a new Lowes, Wal-Mart distribution complex, and then the road will narrow from 4-lanes to 2-lanes. About 3+ miles after the road narrows to 2-lanes, you will come to a stoplight intersection with State Route 22 at Boswells Tavern and a small gas station will be on your left. At this lighted intersection, turn RIGHT onto State Route 22 East towards Louisa. The farm is located about 1 mile down State Route 22, and will be on your right-hand side (look for CBF event signs).
What to wear: Clothes and sturdy shoes you do not mind getting dirty. Volunteers should dress for the weather, including layers of clothes to adjust for variable weather conditions during the day. So far the weather is calling for 59 and sunny, but please check the weather again and dress accordingly.
What to bring: - Filled out wavier form (attached). - * Brown bag lunch and bring plenty of water to drink. - Mug for hot chocolate or tea, you’ll want some! J - Water bottle for water refills. - Hats, sturdy shoes, and work gloves are recommended – and if you have a shovel or garden spade to bring that would also be great. What to expect: We will be planting saplings which will require bending over to place tree in pre-dug holes in the ground, pounding in a small stake beside each tree, and placing a plastic tree tube over each tree which helps protect the baby trees. Children should be accompanied by an adult. We will work from 9:00 - 11:45, take a break and then continue working after the break. If we have more than enough help to get the job done we may finish early! **lunch is not provided, please bring your own. ** Contact: If you have a question prior to the event please contact Jess B |

Since sarah, andrew and rachel were the only ones at the last meeting we have some updates. Sarah is unable to make the Reedville Canoe trip on September 18th to the 20th. We will be staying at Judy's moms house however Racehl doubts we are camping...since..its at a house...idk..anyway Rachel needs to know who is going because she is cooking for this trip and needs to know how much food to buy! Also since we are canoeing/kayaking so does anyone have either of those? Rachel's boyfriend has three kayaks and Rachel can probably bring two. Lastly, we have decided to have a venturing roundtable on September 27th at 3:30pm. We are meeting at Virginia Center Commons Mall at the Chick-fil-la IN THE FOOD COURT!! |

Just a reminder that Venture Crew 555 is participating in the golden gift receipts. Please bring it to the next meeting or mail it to me if you would like yours to help our crew.
Thanks,
Judy

Golden Gift Certificates are Being Mailed Soon! We will be mailing Golden Gift Certificates to our shoppers in early May. Make sure they submit their certificates to your organization by sending them a message reminding them to look for their certificate! Encourage them to donate their points to your organization as soon as they get their certificate so they can help your organization receive a larger portion of the payout.

Hi Venturers!(or Boy Scouts) Is there anyone else who would like to do a prescuba class before we take scuba at the camping weekend at Lake Rawlings? I received this email from Kim saying that they have the Chickahominy pool on the 17th of May. This is for anyone who is a venturer or not. So you could invite friends to come that are not in the crew yet. The $35.00 cost goes off the total feel if you decide to earn the certification at the camping weekend. I can give people a ride if they need one. Please let me know so I can give Kim a head count. Judy V. (The email is below.) I have a date of May 17 from 12-4:00 for the Chickahominy pool. Let me know how many folks you have to be in the water (scouts, leaders, and parents are welcome). |

Hi Venturers, The first NRA certification class went well with 16 participants. We meet again from 7:30 to 9:30 on Thursday, March 19th. Saturday, the 21st, we will be going to Cavalier to shoot and finish Chapters 3-5 in the NRA pistol book to receive the certification. We will be divided into two groups of 8, to finish the requirements. Because of this, we cannot invite anyone else to attend on that day. Only the 16 taking the class may attend. Hopefully, we can arrange another day in the near future that we can go and invite friends. We will talk to T about this prospect. Also, I wanted to remind you of the Venture Quest Weekend coming the last weekend in April. The cost is $40.00 per person. We will need this from you by the first meeting in April which I believe is April 2nd. We need to register on time. I have a list of people that signed up in January. If any adults want to take the Venture training, please let me know. It is offered that Saturday of the event at the camp. Also, please save your Ukrop's Golden Gift certificates for our crew. We are participating again this year! Have a great week and remember, Venturing is GREAT FUN! YIS, Judy |

Hello Venturers, Thanks so much to David R. for heading up the FOS dinner and program. A special thanks to Raye for her help, and Megan for her hard work on putting together the powerpoint under last minute efforts. Thanks to all the parents for the food and fellowship ,especially Beth, who helped buy some crew food. Everyone did a part to make it a special dinner and I enjoyed seeing all who came. I wanted to touch base about the March meetings. The program will be to earn the NRA pistol certification. The program costs $20.00 which covers materials from NRA. T. White will be leading the program. If you have signed up to take this, you are committed to show up for all three trainings to earn this. The first is on Thursday, March 5th , 2nd is Thursday, March 19th, and the final is the day that we go to Cavalier on Saturday, March 21st. The day we go to Cavalier, each person will need to pay $25.00 for the use of the facility, ammo, instruction, and gun use. I will let you know if the times for our meetings will change just for this training as soon as I hear back from T. Those signed up are: Megan Raye Judy Carole Michele Bill Paige and guest Patrick and guest Andrew David Alex Sarah Sean Dan Reminder: Wednesday, March 11th at 7:00 at council is the Venturing Roundtable. Please try to make plans to attend this as we will be talking about the Venture Quest Weekend at T. Brady Saunders on April 24-26th. If you need a ride to council, let me know. For untrained adult leaders, the Saturday of this weekend is the day that the Venture Training is offered. I believe the cost for the training is $10.00. Remember, Venturing is GREAT fun!!! YIS, Judy

This is a copy of the email that I received from T. Please try to be at the building between 7 and 7:15pm on March 5th so we have a few minutes to talk before the class starts. Thanks. Judy Judy, We will get to the church ( please send directions ) at 7 PM. We will need to set up a few posters and prepare materials. If we start our program at 7:30, we will try to be complete between 9:00 and 9:30 depending on questions and participation from the students. We will need to start promptly at 7:30 to meet this time line. The students should bring note books and pens. We will be happy to have you all on 3/21/09 at 0900 at the range. Thanks but we will not need any electronic equipment. We will need wall space to temporarily hang posters. If walls are not an option, we will need easils or dry erase boards or something similar. Thanks, T |

Clothes: should be old but sturdy so that you don't mind them getting dirty or torn. A complete set of new clothes to wear home or to the place you are staying. You will need to change out of your caving clothes especially if they are wet. or COVERALLS sturdy gloves, shoes or preferably boots that can get muddy and washed off later. You need a decent sole on them to grip if there is mud. a flashlight that will be a second source of light after your helmet light. Extra batteries for your flashlight.
dO NOT BRING LARGE FLASHLIGHTS =SMALLER IS PREFERRED A LARGE TRASHBAG THAT IS THICKER THAN THE THIN GARBAGE BAG VARIETY TO PUT IN YOUR MUDDY CLOTHES AND BOOTS SINCE THE PEOPLE DRIVING PREFER TO KEEP THEIR CARS CLEAN A SMALL PACK OR BACKPACK THAT CAN BE EASILY TAKEN ON AND OFF (IN A CRAWL WAY THAT IS NARROW THIS MAY BECOME VERY USEFUL), FOOD, WATER IN SOME TYPE OF CONTAINER WE WILL PROVIDE HELMETS FROM RASS AND LIGHTS. WE WILL SEND OUT A PERMISSION SLIP VIA THIS MEDIUM AND YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT BUT IT NEEDS TO BE FILLED OUT FOOD SHOULD NOT BE SOMETHING THAT GETS EASILY BRUISED OR DAMAGED-ACTUALLY YOU WILL EAT IN THE CAR BEFORE GOING IN

This Thursday, February 5th is our regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30. One of the vice presidents will be leading the meeting unless Sean can be there. Judy would like to remind you that we wear class A uniforms to our meetings unless otherwise decided. We will hopefully have a new venturer joining us for the meeting. Please invite a friend to come that may be interested in caving. David is in charge of the FOS dinner at our next meeting, so he may want to plan that. The program will be led by Carole Noble-Park and Michele Park concerning caving. The cost for the caving trip is $45.00 because we will be spending the night at Natural Bridge. Food is not included, so you need to bring around $20.00 because you will be responsible for paying for your own meals for Saturday night supper, Sunday breakfast, and lunch. Carole will be explaining exactly what you need to bring for caving. On Sunday, we may be able to visit the Natural Bridge and Foamhenge. Please bring your $10.00 deposit for the caving on Thursday. In March, we will be taking the NRA certification for pistols. The trip to Cavalier will finish up this certification. In April, is the venture quest weekend at T. Brady Saunders camp. In May, we have the scuba certification weekend at the Lake. In June, batteau? In July, Key Largo trip. etc. |
