Compare means that you Compare AND Contrast. To compare means to look at the similarities and differences. So it is redundant, and maybe a little repetitive, to say "compare and contrast."
Contrast, however, means to ONLY look at the differences. This question should tell you to look at the similarities and differences. Often, this question will only say "compare" and so many kids just right all the similarities.
In a good comparative essay (where you are comparing, and hmm... contrasting), you must have:
